Hades 27,980
I found this on ATRL. The Prologue : It starts with a prayer like 'humming' sound done by a man or group of men, you can hear orchestral sounds in the background while she is speaking about the two houses and the whole story. It's very Romeo and Juliet. Then it suddenly stops and the vocodor part begins which is still quite orchestral but lighter than her speaking verse. She repeats a line throughout it but it's kind of hard to understand as it's so processed but I think it's something along the lines of 'I'm the child(?) of a money hungry, blood filled(?) country' 100 Letters : It's quite light, production wise. It has some 80's vibes as well. All in all a pretty mid tempo track but it follows the intro perfectly mood wise. She tells the story nicely like she said in interviews. The pre-chorus goes like this : "He said : please don't go away. I said : It's too late" and that part gets quite repeated a few times. I expected a bit more from this song but it's very nice, laidback and needed in this album's concept for it to make sense. Eyes Closed : We've heard this one before, this is one of the darker ones. The placement of this song follows the contrast presented in The Prologue (dark against light). So you get a lighter song, a darker song etc. It's not the album's standout by far but the album wouldn't be complete without it I think. Heaven In Hiding : This is one of the more uptempo ones, it has a stomping like production which goes well with her raspy vocals which are very evident in this song. Her voice builds up in the chorus and comes down on the last note. The chorus goes something like this (but it changes some words when she repeats it for the second time) : "...and you surrender to the touch, you'll know. I can put on a show, I can put on a show, don't u see what you're finding, this is heaven in hiding." I wouldn't call it light or dark, it's right in the middle. Alone : This one surprised me production wise as it's quite retro sounding, like a 70's soul/rnb record. The song is quite light but the lyrics are darker, really nice contrast here. The song basically warns people wanting to meet her. Basically saying that as soon as you'll meet her you'll wish you never did. That's also the chorus : "I know you're dying to meet me but I can just tell you this, baby as soon as you meet me, you'll wish you never did." She also talks about being surrounded by people yet still feeling alone in her mind. Now Or Never : The lead single, we've all heard it. I think it's the perfect first single to be lifted from this album, it sets the mood nicely. In the album's order this is one that's a bit darker again especially compared to Alone's retro production. Sorry : A really beautiful piano ballad, it doesn't explode or anything. Her vocals are quite emotional on this one, a goosebumps moment. And I'm glad she put in a ballad in there, it gives the album more humanity if that makes sense. She basically sings in the chorus : "So I'm sorry to my unknown lover, sorry that I can't believe that anybody ever really starts to fall in love with me. Sorry to my unknown lover, sorry I could be so blind, didn't mean to leave you and all of the things that we had behind." Followed by a couple 'ooh's, really beautiful. Good Mourning : The 2nd interlude which starts with a kid talking about wether Hopeless fountain kingdom is a place or just a state of mind. I think Halsey also described this in an interview(?) After that she repeats the line "Sun is coming up...." which you can hear in the snippet. It ends on a piano note which then flows into 'Lie'. the whole thing is very mellow, innocent sounding. Lie : This is the one where she said she is kind of rapping but its more like trap singing if that makes sense. It's a darker one and will be a grower for some people. The song start off with a few Quavo adlibs in the background and then Halsey sings the verse + chorus, then Quavo comes in with his own verse and the chorus after that is the final chorus already but you can hear Quavo in the background softly doing some stuff vocally while Halsey sings. I love this song but I don't know, I think fans will be divided over it, I guess it depends on your taste, this is def. the more urban part of the album. Walls Could Talk : One of the best songs on this album although it's an interlude. It's basically the tour commercial and the snippet you all heard only with a second verse added. But the whole thing is criminally short like Birthday Cake was. The whole 00's pop vibe is there, it's very Overprotected, something like those 00's songs with strings etc. Bad At Love : Starts off really nicely with some short choir vocals. It's uptempo, urban pop. The pre-chorus goes like : "Look I don't mean to frustrate but I always make the same mistakes cause..." and then she starts off the chorus kind of screaming with "I'm bad at love" and other sentences follow it. Very nice and a definite standout for me, concept wise and just generally. Don't Play : This is my favorite by far, it's another uptempo urban pop song. A darker one as well but the production is really nicely detailed. Should be a single imo. The song is basically talking about how she is alone yet she is getting paid and winning. The chorus goes like : "Mother****er don't play with me". Definite standout production wise, I could see it work really well on radio with a radio mix for the chorus cause that, while brilliant, might be a bit too 'special' for US radio lol. Either way this song is fire and the outro slays where she's basically saying "women don't play no games". Strangers : The best collab on the album and one of the album's standouts as well. Hope it becomes a single, it's a little lighter and more poppier than the urban section of the album. Basically starts off the last section of the album. Angel On Fire : This track gave me the most Badlands vibes lyrically for some reason. I think this is another standout, especially out of the last three songs. My only annoyance with this song is how she pronounces 'fire', she does it in this weird way. Either way another dramatic uptempo ish song but that's all said in a positive light. Devil In Me : I love the verses on this and how it builds up to the chorus but then the chorus kind of lets me down. Did Sia write this? Youc an kind of hear her trademark on it or maybe it's just me. The song is basically about Halsey not wanting to wake up the devil in her. That's also the chorus : "I don't wanna wake it up, I don't wanna wake it up, the devil in me. Gotta wake up, gotta wake up, come back to life'. It's nice though but I just wanted the chorus to be a bigger if that makes sense. Hopeless : The last song, it starts with Halsey singing without any vocal effects but then it turns into vocodor vocals again. Switches up to normal vocals again, for the second verse but then the vocodor vocals are more apparent all the way through to the end. It's a good outro, like I said before, for me it goes hand in hand with The Prologue. Like a good ending song for a movie, well the movie that'd be this relationship. All in all, I'd give this album an 8/10 and say that it's a very good sophomore effort, it follows Badlands perfectly but takes it into that bigger space that's needed to break out imo. Kind of like what Rihanna did with GGGB, Gaga with TFM and Katy with TD. Just the right amount of everything. I also like this Halsey more than the one on Badlands, she's a bit more confident on this one yet as dark as she always was on some songs. It's a good mix. Favorites : The Prologue, Heaving In Hiding, Alone, Now Or Never, Good Mourning, Walls Could Talk, Bad At Love, Don't Play, Strangers, Devil In Me Potential Singles : Alone, Walls Could Talk, Bad At Love, Don't Play

Dominic 11,922
I'm excited for it, each track has been great. She has lost a lot of that teeny bop sound from her first album so I won't feel as ashamed listening to it in public now The hardest thing in this world is to live in it
littlepotter 75,147
Now or Never was meh, Eyes Closed was disappointing, but Strangers is honestly one of the best songs I've heard this year. I'm really, really hoping the rest of the album is more of the latter. Badlands was mesmerizing. chaeri pls
