Lady Gaga: Star Producers Are ‘the Most Dangerous Thing That Has Happened to This Business’

Shots fired! In Billboard's new cover story, Lady Gaga takes aim at superstar producers (not by name) like Dr. Luke and Max Martin, saying their manner of dictating the sound of the artists they work with hurts the industry.

Something has happened where the producers have begun to think or believe — or the industry has begun to think or believe — that the producer makes the hits. This is the most dangerous thing that has happened to this business. Because it takes the credibility away from the singer and from the artist...that's the key to the success of the music industry--allowing the artist to creatively run the ship.

But "[t]here are certain artists who aren't able to run the ship," Billboard retorts. And Gaga re-retorts:

Or maybe they are, but producers are getting in their way. I'll probably get in trouble for saying that, but I don't care, because I'm looking out for the future of this industry. And I believe so much that this industry is being revitalized every day in more and more areas ... we can sell millions and millions of records in the first week, like we used to. But we have to remember that music began with the artist.

--------------------

Gaga sort of predicted what is happening right now...now Dj's run the pop sphere of music and producers work is more anticipated then the artists stuff themselves. A good example is with Katy Perry...I read so many posts saying "omg this song is by Max can't wait for it!" or "Sia co wrote this and Ali Payami is doing this one omg smasha!" and then they brush aside or sound less enthusiastic about songs produced by other ppl who may not be known to be massive hit makers...it's as if they stan the producers. We also have this problem in the Monsters community but I won't get into it too much lol...

But this also shows to me that Gaga probably won't have many uptempo single worthy tracks produced by Redone on her records again. She worked with Redone when he was not known in America..they both pushed a signature sound and once he became too famous himself and started working with other artists I think Gaga got apprehensive about working with him because he became a "star producer"...fans were saying her only real massive hits were thanks to him and I think she really didn't like that. She did recently work with him on another sound for LG5 before it became Joanne but I think she scrapped the work mainly for the reasons above...she did not want her "comeback record" to be thanks to Redone bops...she didn't want ppl to think she is having success because of him. So she worked with other producers who may be star producers but that she has not worked with before so if she did have success ppl would not immediately associate it to her personal past hitmaker. Now did it turn out the way she wanted? idk because Joanne has not produced a massive smash hit like her previous records but it did put her in good graces with the GP and she did secure a big pure sales hit with MR and no one is according that success to MArk or Bloodpop like they would of with a Redone track.

Sorry for the essay just found it interessting. :poot:

Oh wow, I don't remember this. I love vintage shade.

But yeah, I agree with almost all of this. Glad she's relatively stuck by it.

shame

honestly, keep these big names away from the studio and the music quality skyrockets. take Katy for example: By the Grace of God and Thinking of You. They are such beautifully crafted, soulful songs she wrote herself or with one co-writer that put most of her discography to shame.

But Max Martin makes the best pop currently available... Just listen to his songs on Starboy... I think the worst part are mediocre producers making crap songs but then companies paying a lot so that crap can get promo and attention. I don't think Max Martin is mediocre, and I also think Gaga's best songs (doesnt mean hits) are by DJWS and Garibay, that aren't big pop mainstream names but make that good quality music.

¿Qué currículum tiene ésta tarántula?

It's a chicken/egg problem.  Since only a few producers craft most of the music people associate their music with "good" pop and don't know how to respond to other sounds outside th e Swedish gang sound.

I agree.

I'm glad she produced the godly track that is:

alone.

People keep giving credit only to RedOne, DJ White Shadow, Zedd, Madeon, Mark Ronson, Fernando Garibay when it comes to Gaga's work. People keep forgetting that Gaga IS a major producer of her own work, when I say major producer, that means she's BEYOND a co-producer. She has given equal if not more contribution to her songs than her producers do.

She produced Venus alone. She wrote You and I, Just Another Day alone. Any Lady Gaga track you listen to directly comes from her, sure there's contribution coming from other producers but she's not Beyonce, Rihanna, Katy Perry who don't know how to produce their own songs.

I think Gaga is literally the only female artist who produces her own tracks.

Agree with everything about what Gaga said.

However RedOne isn't a star producer anymore.  I think the last "big" artist he worked with was Nicki Minaj.

:oprah:

Beyonce and Katy both have producer credits on their latest albums. Marina Diamandis wrote every song on her last album and helped co-produce. Let's not act like Gaga is the only one who does this.

I also didn't want to mention the fact that Venus had a co-producer but here we are.

OT: I see no lies. They're stripping music of its artistic side in favor of popularity and money. For them, music isn't about expression or even enjoyment. It's a cold hearted business and all that matters is pushing product.

🌸Flourishing and vibrant🌼
