What I don't understand is why almost all girls are flopping now. Just "features" songs that include girls have success :wtf:

Women should be smashing right now (+ The Cure, of course). It's so unfair.

The performance of Selena's supposed lead single Bad Liar is proof of how oversaturated Top 40 is right now. Guess the same could be said about CTTR. And The Cure. Things were not like this 6 years ago. There were certain Top 40 staples that released singles and that's what radio played, and that's what charted in the Top 10. Now radio is playing a lot more unknowns and giving a lot more songs chances that years ago never would have been played in the first place, and because of that there's a lot more artists that are releasing songs and need spins.

On top of that, the idea of eras and breaks and lead singles is basically gone. Artists are releasing anything, a lot more features, and no one cares anymore about lead singles or new eras. The fact that just a couple years ago Good For You was like the highest selling debut for a female and there was so much buzz around it and it's not even that good of a song, while Bad Liar won't even get a 50k debut. On top of that, radio is overplaying a select 3-6 songs and others are fighting for airplay. It's all just so frustrating as a chart watcher. Really miss 2011-ish when artists released songs, they were hits, and then they moved on to the next single 2-3 months later until their album cycle was over. Tbh.

It's sort of weird too that some songs are only popular because of streaming. Like, there's some hits that aren't played much on radios but really have astronomical streams on spotify and YT and lots of young people simply know the song even if it wasnt on radios.

I feel like years ago iTunes + radios were dictating the hits (and it's still a bit like that) but rn with streams it's less that :oprah:
