I don't get this obsession with Lady Gaga and the charts. First of all, she's still enjoying chart success. Second of all, the charts do not matter anymore. Music has progressed to a point where you can be a notable musician without needing 'smash hits'. Lana del Rey, Florence + the Machine, Marina and the Diamonds are just a few examples of notable, respected, pop-alternative musicians that experience a dedicated fan base and deliver memorable eras time and time again. If Gaga is transitioning into an artist like that, then she'll be in great company.

I think it's really sad some fans weren't able to truly take in and enjoy the Joanne era due to fixation with the charts. We got great visuals (Perfect Illusion + John Wayne), performances (AMAs, Carpool Karaoke, SNL, Royal Albert Hall, X Factor UK, Japanese Promo, VSFS, etc), songs (all of them, but notable fan favorites like Diamond Heart, Ayo, Joanne, John Wayne, Dancin' in Circles, Perfect Illusion and Million Reasons), fashion (the signature pink hat, cut-off jean shorts and crop tops, among other signature fashion choices), and interviews. And, on top of all this she's had a Top 5 Billboard Hot 100 song that has reached over 100M Spotify streams and remains a steady presence on the radio and on iTunes charts. 

If you'll look at the previous paragraph, the least memorable thing is her chart position for Million Reasons. So stop caring about the charts so much, of course we want her albums to sell and singles to resonate (and lead to more album sales) but if it's not a smash, just be happy that she continues to serve distinct visuals and performances to make each era unique and special to her fans!

She could easily get a big hit if she wants. She goes to #1 on iTunes everywhere and streaming & radio are improving. The issue is her promo. Of course ASIB is happening, but if it wasn't and she was actually promoting The Cure right now with a music video out, it would definitely be a top 10 hit.

There haven't been any real smash hits since 2013. All the "hits" since that year (which is when streaming was incorporated into the charts) have been a perfect Illusion. Did you know that there are "click factories" in China where you can pay to have millions of Facebook likes, or Spotify streams, or YouTube views?

That's why I don't believe any of the statistics since 2013. 

Gaga is now a different kind of success compared to 2009-2011. It's a more stable success with longevity.

She's a touring artist (like Beyoncé) who doesn't need billions of views or number 1 singles to generate revenue. 

Charts themselves are becoming irrelevant.

MR becoming the best selling female (solo) song of this year? *so far

Becoming the first female artist to headline Coachella in 10 years?

Gainning the highest viewed Super Bowl halftime show performance, ultimately becoming the most watched event in music history?

Going on a sold out world tour here in August?

"Joanne" selling over 1.3+ million copies worldwide

Giving "Tiffany and Co" a 250% sales increase due to her campaign?

... and you're wanting a #1 hit? The bitch is breaking records and setting new heights left and right. GAGA is always cool.

I mean imagine if Gaga had debuted The Cure at the SuperBowl? It probably would've been her first #1 in years. It just seems like the stars haven't properly aligned in such a long time for us to get a hit. I know we can all enjoy Gaga without smashes, but if Gaga wants to be a popstar, she'll need to get hits, otherwise she should focus on acting or release music completely outside of the mainstream.

It's okay we haven't had a smash, I think.  People still enjoy her music.  But, oh boy, how I long for the excitement of 2009, 2010 (Telephone, Alejandro), 2011 (BTW), and 2013 (AP).  It's okay, though.  She's creating such a beautiful legacy.  

I really just hate feeling like a freak for listening to her (specifically Slay-jandro) every. single. day. but ya gotta own it and screw what the GP think of her and the fanbase.  

So what I'm trying to say is...I see both sides of missing the smash and enjoying her current path.  Gotta find the middle ground in these polarizing times.

Okay, I'm sorry, but this is legitimately annoying. I don't want to single you out or anything, but you always make these kinds of threads, and I don't know if it's a joke or not, but you have to realize that artists come and go. And no, I'm not saying that Gaga's "gone", but it's just a simple fact that she isn't as popular as she use to be.

If you're stanning Gaga for the sole purpose of just having a hit, then you need to stan someone else because the truth of the matter is is that Gaga may not ever have that "super, amazing, spectacular #1 hit" again, and that's okay. If you're making your whole life revolve around the marketabilitty and getting a "smah hit", then you're not truly enjoying the art.

Remember, Gaga's an artist, not a money making machine. Music is art, and art is suppose to be created for the creator. Art itself in't suppose to be about making other people feel good, and art itself shouldn't be made to please or pander to other people. Art needs to be made for the artist, and if that means going in a more alternative and less mainstream direction, then so be it.

Ugh yes she is uncool to the gp and single choices have been so bad since BTW but the biggest thing holding Gaga back is herself. DWUW, Applause, Million Reasons, The Cure could have all been #1s with proper promotion in a reasonable time frame
