When I was a freshman at NYU and Facebook was only a year old and people created/joined groups like "I have dimples" and "Fake ID, please!," I remember coming across a Facebook group that broke my heart. It's name, something like: "Stefani Germanotta, you will never be famous."

The page housed pictures of a pretty Norah Jones-esque young 18-year-old NYU student who sang and played piano at local bars.

The group was peppered with comments, sharp as porcupine needles, vilifying the aspiring musician for being an "attention-*****." Scores asked: "Who does she think she is?" I also remember one dude posting a flyer for one of her upcoming gigs at a local village bar. He had clearly stomped on the flyer, an outline of his muddy sole [soul] struggling to eclipse her name.

I couldn't shake the raw feeling of filth while scrolling down that Facebook page, but I pretty much — and quickly — forgot about that group and that girl with the intense raven eyes.

Until about five years later. I was on an Amtrak train from NYC to Philly, reading a Vanessa Grigoriadis New York Magazine profile on Lady Gaga. I floated somewhat mindlessly through the piece until I got to the first sentence of the second paragraph:

"Before the meeting, I assumed that someone with a stage name like “Lady” (her given name is Stefani Joanne Germanotta) was going to be a bit standoffish..."

HOLY S---, I screamed to an empty car (Those who hang with me will know that I actually shrieked). LADY GAGA IS STEFANI GERMANOTTA? STEFANI IS LADY GAGA?

I was overcome with a dizzying emotional cocktail of stage-mom-at-a-beauty-pageant and nerd-revenge triumph. But also shame. Shame that I never wrote on that group, shame that I never defended the girl with the intense raven eyes — the girl whose brave flyers were stomped on, probably somewhere near my dorm.

Honestly it breaks my heart thinking about a 19 year old Stefani, excitedly putting up posters for her gig, only for them to be pulled down and stomped on, and then mocked on Facebook by her peers. These f**king leeches did everything they could to crush her, make sure she never followed her dreams to become famous. 

But it didn't work. In 2013, eight years later, the good sis was in the Guinness Book Of World Records for THE MOST FAMOUS PERSON ON EARTH  OGHs are shook 

I wonder what the creators of that page are up to now  Do you think they ever listen to Gaga? I wonder if they watched the super bowl

The struggle made her aware of all the hardwork she had to put into her art. That's why she is one of the most authentic artists in the history - she had to work for it - it did not happen over night.

Honestly it's like the perfect revenge dream...

All these people making fun of you, telling you that you will never amount to anything, stamping on the flyers you made advertising your performances and laughing at you behind your back.

Then one day - sitting at home on the weekend, after working hard all week at a job they hate trying to pay the bills, with a partner they resent and an unplanned child screaming in the background they turn on the T.V for SuperBowl, along with everyone else in the U.S, and at the halftime show they are suddenly confronted with this:

 

And they just have to sit there like....

"Sh*t... I was totally wrong about her... If only I had stood up for her, if only I had supported her, if only I had been her friend"


I remember Gaga telling the story of meeting one of the girls who bullied her at TMB and her being like "Well, **** I guess you had the last laugh" and Gaga's response was something along the lines of "I don't even care about that, I don't want to be like 'F*ck you, I made it'"

So if she isn't going to experience schadenfreude at the expense of her old bullies, I guess I'll take some of the satisfaction

Heh, now they're regretting how badly they treated her. Probably pressed and jealous.

There are some people who say that she doesn't deserve to be where she is but they are so wrong. She deserves every ****ing drop of success she has. She clawed her way to the top and she always got back up no matter how many times she was kicked down. It has never been about the Ferraris or huge mansions for her. It's about sharing her passion with the world.
