Just how "unique" and "experimental" is ARTPOP?

So if we're talking about a mainstream pop album then yes I would consider it to be experimental. It's certainly unique, has very strong production, some of my favorite songs, and an overall hectic vibe (but in a positive way that works). 

Is it experimental? That's debatable. As many people have pointed out, there are tracks that are certainly flirting with that notion; Aura, MJH, and at times Swine could very much fit that notion. However, it doesn't actually go far enough into the experimental territory (or even in the musical genre of art-pop). But it's certainly a daring album.

Venus yes, has a very unique sound (the production is incredible)

It may noot sound that experimental compared to "experimental music" from underground artists... but it was bold-crazy-experimental coming from a mainstream female pop artist from the top of the charts (well... at least before it came out )

Aura is experimental imo, no pop girl has released a song like it, and the demo was even more experimental than the album version. Venus was slightly experimental production wise and had a bizarre structure and lyrics. ARTPOP was unpredictable. The swinefest version of Swine was again unlike anything I'd ever heard from a pop girl. Lyrically it's unlike most pop music. Born This Way remains her most experimental record.

I feel like Gaga wanted to do so much more but was held back. I hope someday she can have her own label or fund her own albums and see the full mastery of herself.

That's why I love her concert tours because they are full on Gaga.

I think it was probably intended to be far more ambitious than it turned out to be. Whether Interscope told Gaga to tone it down, or Gaga herself felt she was getting too outrageous, I've never felt like it was the album Gaga set out to make. Pure speculation, but those are my thoughts.

Born This Way is a far edgier and more unique album, in my opinion. Influences from the past combined with classic Gaga lyricism, daring sounds and leaping into territory that wasn't popular at the time. ARTPOP was just a loud interpretation of artists like Zedd (which was popular at the time) with a Gaga twist lol.

Conceptually, it's a bit of a mess. But it is a beautiful, bold, unforgettable mess. I love that album. Even in 2017, there is something refreshingly uninhibited about it.

"My ARTPOP could mean anything" is the most mysterious lyric in history. I mean, the sentence itself can be deconstructed into several meanings.

But what even is ARTPOP? Is it all in the mind of the audience? Or is it a riddle that only Gaga knows? Or is it something that she designed to make no sense? But if so, why does it mean such different things to different people?

Seriously the album is so atmospheric, so pristine, so synthetically psychedelic.

It's a polemic. A diamond in the rough.

And I'm ok with samples like Venus where it is done cleverly, but taking the instrumental and putting a voice over the top isn't really experimental.

And the other half of the album has lots of songs that sound similar to other stuff already out there.

I'm not trying to say these are the same or copied, It's clear that they're not, but just pointing out that the sounds aren't unique or experimental.

I'm not sure if it's experimental but it sure is one of the greatest pop albums ever made.
