He was set up for failure, used, abused (both as a child and as an adult), taken advantage of, lied about/to, and treated like an object. It pushed him so far and cut him so deeply that he became dependent on drugs and the only way he could even get a full night's sleep was with surgical strength anesthetics which lead to his untimely death. A man with an honest, loving, and caring heart that was stomped on by the cruelty of others. Such a shame. StrawberryBlond 14,632
I think you should have put Xtina (Bionic-present) and Madonna (Erotica, MDNA-present) there too, but ok. I'm basing demise on the success of the music most of all. Their mental health and treatment by the public is only relevant if it truly put a dent in their sales. Mariah - She's had two demises: the Glitter breakdown and the general success downturn post-Touch My Body. She made a fabulous return to form after Glitter could have ended her career but now she won't be able to come back now she's going through the second downfall. But the amount of longevity she's had and the fact that she's relevant with her Christmas song every year ensures that there could be worse. Britney - While her success was never near the success she experienced at the beginning, she pulled off the incredible feat of having Womanizer go #1 post-breakdown which was only her second US #1 single, if you can believe it. She then had a further 2 US #1 singles. And she continued to tour and she's about to complete her surprisingly successful residency. Her demise could have ended her career but she kept going. Michael - I'm 27, so I'm too young to remember him at his peak and I only was aware of his old hits and the only part of his personal life that I remembered him for was the moment when he held his baby out the balcony. But his sales were still amazingly, despite all the backlash. His final album, Invincible, sold 10 million worldwide in 2001. For someone of his age and the time period, that's brilliant. For a true demise, I believe someone's sales have to suffer and all things considered, his fall in sales wasn't any worse than what any other artist goes through, scandals or not. Whitney - Definitely one of the worst. After her amazing comeback with My Love Is Your Love, with about 11 million sold worldwide, it all fell apart. Her follow-up album sold little more than 2 million worldwide which was disastrous by 2002 standards and her final album only sold 2.5 million worldwide which was awful for 2009 standards. She just went downhill dramatically and never recovered her reputation and her tours were apparently a shambles. Gaga - In comparison to the ones we've already been through, Gaga doesn't look all that bad now. Her albums only had a couple of million sales knocked off them with every release, it wasn't like she dropped 10 million+ sales every time. And she's still getting hits. So, hardly comparable. Justin - He hit rock bottom in sales after his third album. It just seems like everyone had moved on to 1D. His idea of releasing a new song every week failed miserably on the world charts (nowadays with streaming, it could have been a different story), the album he eventually put out containing all those songs flopped amazingly despite being released days before Christmas. It was so bad that his label re-branded the album as a 'compilation album' as opposed to a studio release to cover up its performance and even the documentary movie he released at the same time flopped. His career seemed to be over but then his new single was released and the rest is history. So, due to his amazing comeback, the demise can't be the worst. Katy - This downfall has got so much further to go. We've barely begun. Far too early to call on this one and besides, it's the album after this one that'll truly determine if she declined or not. Iggy - Sure, she's had a downfall but she was never all that successful to begin with. Look at the sales of her one album. She's considered a one hit wonder by many and like most one hit wonders, they go through a downfall. Ā So, my vote goes to Janet. Her stats are shocking. The SB ended her. Even before the SB, she was doing fantastically in the charts, considering her age. She got a BB #1 single in 2001! But just 3 years later, Nipplegate happened and she was blacklisted from radio and she never got so much as a top ten song again. Her album released at SB time sold 3 million which would be fantastic today, but it was flop city in 2004. 20 Y.O and Discipline followed, producing no hits and selling the same amount of copies in the US as her early flop releases in the 80's. Look up her discography and gasp. I think the worst demise should be by an artist who flopped and never recovered and poor Janet was put through the wringer on this one.Ā
homomo 23,883
Britney and Michael at #1 for sure.Ā Then I would say Justin Bieber. Michael had all those pedophillia allegations. Britney had her infamous breakdown. And Justin Bieber was simply an over-all mess for two years. Ā the rest simply just didn't get sales. I wouldn't call that a demise.Ā Ā 0110100001100101011011000110110001101111
