Aleksey Yurievich 144
I remember good old days when stans were discussing outfits, gossips and stuff and people barely cared about the charts. Now it seems like people are so concerned with charts. When exactly did it change? 2011? 2013? The more statistics is available - the scarier it gets. I remember when I checked BB100 once a week in 2010 and that was about it. Sure, it's natural if you want your fave to succeed, but sometimes when you look at the bigger picture stans literally waste their time counting label's money, it's seems so pointless to be obsessed with charts and follow them with the precision of a Wall Street trader. Plus, if you take into consideration the "payola factor" you can realize that everything can be bought with label's coins, so the chart run of the majority of the songs is extremely predictable (expect for few smash hits, sleeper hits, etc.). I also think that stans do exaggerate the importance of chart run. Fans should also take into consideration the fact that it's label who mostly cares about the chart performance, so there is no point to freak out about discounts, streaming parties and so on. MaryJaneHolland 77,348
Cuz pop girls are flopping. Back then no one cared, because the songs smashed anyway, unlike nowadays.
Aced 538
edit: whops maybe i should not only read half of the title and then comment A scattered dream that's like a far-off memory... a far-off memory that's like a scattered dream.
uo111 5,261
I only know anything about the charts whenever a thread is made on here complaining about them. I guess that doesn't answer your question, but it's so foreign to me to care.
Glory 2,247
It didn't change, still the same since a long time You forgot the fight over Bad Romance not going #1 ..

Even in 2011 stans were arguing about views of TEOG with the Army, MTN underperfomance and so on.
Harry 26,836
It was still like this in 2010. I think a reason it's so prominent now is that there are a lot more resources available to easily find info and data about a song. For example we didn't have Kworb in 2010. Blade 5,603
It's the opposite with me honestly. Back in 2009 I was so mad that LoveGame & Paparazzi weren't #1 but ever since Marry The Night underperformed, I realised that a song doesn't have to do well on the charts to be good. Cracks 1,238
I'd rather follow charts than panic everytime a song I like doesn't go n.1 on the first day, like some people here do.
Killa 17,460
i know i was obssessed with charts when i was in highschool and when Gaga appeared on the scene i got more into it. but now we have a lot more charts, you can really nerd your way into it, it's quite fun. YeehawKylie 7,817
Well, I think it has to do with how the charts have changed in recent years. It's so streaming-centered now, that it's not as representative toward hard sales. For example, in 2010 if Gaga had headlined the Superbowl and sold 140K+ units in a week, I'm pretty sure she'd hit the top spot. In February we were surprised to see her has high as #4 on the charts. I think it's the difference between 2010 when we just bought a song or album and that was our part versus now where you feel like you have to stream and album or song endlessly to support an artist. Green Detox 2,779
The only thing i cared about back in 2011 was Gaga's gimmicks and how she steals everyone's attention, because thr charts was no big deal cuz i know the sales will slay, it's those "ARTPOP Flopped" circa moments when the raw magic of standom just died.
