Depends on what node I have my brain stuck in - if I listen for English, I hear 'without the Scheiße', and if someone tells me that it sounds like she's saying 'verdammte', then yeah, I'll hear that. Pretty sure she's saying something like [w̞ɪːðau̯ʔtə] or [βɪːðau̯ʔtə], with fortition of the initial semivowel (possibly due to anticipation of the MoA of /ð/, as well as th-stopping the definite article (and possibly lowering the VoT of the voiced interdental as well, I'd need to listen to it a few more times). Likely these two things are because she's somewhat out of breath.

In this case, to the German ear, the fortified /w/ would sound like an initial /v~f/, and the final [-u̯ʔtə] can definitely sound like /mtə/ or /mptə/. The confusion of Eng. /ɪ/ with German /ə~ɐ/ is interesting, but the former is arguably more centralized, and the [-front] [-back] is likely what causes it to map that way in the brain.

Thanks my language teacher :D
Haha thats exactly why I thinks its "verdammte";
Because I watched the video complete, so heard about 4 minutes english before and also several times "without" the Scheiße.
So my brain was in "english mode" but at 4.35 it was so clear for me that it is "verdammte".

I'm confused. It says it's "without the Scheisse yeah" in the booklet, so... that's what it is. Why are you all saying it's verdammte? Wishful thinking?

Dude, I listen to Scheiße since 2011 and never heard such a clear "verdammte" since in this video at 4.35. If it was wishful thinking I could have brought up that veeery long time ago and more often.

Dude, I've been listening since 2011 too and the booklet says it's "without the". End of thread.

You're still a native German speaker though, right? I don't believe native speakers of English and German will agree on this one because in cases of fuzziness the brain will jump back to its default. Of course it's certainly possible that she does intend to say 'verdammte', but she's never done it before and likely wouldn't know what it means as she's not really known for her German afaik.

It really is Without The .. I don't know why people make it verdammte, just because it's German. :madge:

Did you read my opening about this thread?
Because it sometimes listens like she used that word.
On the CD it is most probable without the, but who says that she cant change the words on live performances :)

To sump up:

I only ask for your opinions what you hear at 4:35. Not more not less.
I dont want any "wannabe-knower" here who are justifying everything with the booklet or the official lyrics.

And then it was changed to 'Koons' in the second weekend because it was clearly wrong the first time.

She is literally a Koons swan in the music video when she's singing that line.

If you are German and your brain processes human speech through a German lens, she definitely sounds like she's saying verdammte here.

I'm dutch hun, I would hear it too. Dutch is basically part of the german language. But I really couldn't hear it in that video or in the song. Not even in the acapella. :oprah:
