She have been giving signals of that interest in Mariah since Applause, and I think its because Gaga is, or was in her childhood a fan of Mariah. Gaga as a composer/writer have always a retro vibe. The production of the song, made for mimmicking the contemporary sound was probably a concession to the charts. TC have a cute melody, maybe it could be more interesting with a different production but Gaga is a popstar and need to sell, and that's not bad nor diminished its value as a creative work.
