Obama set aside his personal beliefs and the rights of a minority in order to advance his political career, later claiming that gay White House staffers inspired his change of heart...and that shameless act of political calculation, and those lies, are some how preferable to you then what John Kasich is doing....why? (insert snarky emoji here) If you didn't think Obama's triple flip flop on the issue of gay marriage made his public evolution superior or preferable to Kasich's why would you have brought up his 1996 position on gay marriage? Obviously you think the fact that Obama reversed his support of gay marriage before returning to that position is a positive thing...or you wouldn't have said it. Why mention it? I brought up Obama's position in 1996 on Gay Marriage to give further detail on his stance, since you brought up him & his position first. And so if their stances on the issue are just alike, are you saying that Kasich in a few years will flip & be in total support of gay marriage then?? The point being? 2 hours ago, Whispering said: Or they were evolving and rethinking their religious beliefs along with other Americans. It is possible that both happened. Of course, politicians do have to somewhat move with their party position, but there was also a very obvious shift in public thinking during those years. It was still a big step for Obama to come out and declare his support when he did. Like Obama, Kasich seems to be a person who has a level of moral integrity. I do believe they have considered their positions on policies beyond just what will get them elected. I can give Kasich credit, but at the same time I'm going to give Obama credit for wrestling with his own moral questions over the years. Axelrod writes that he knew Obama was in favor of same-sex marriages during the first presidential campaign, even as Obama publicly said he only supported civil unions, not full marriages. Axelrod also admits to counseling Obama to conceal that position for political reasons. "Opposition to gay marriage was particularly strong in the black church, and as he ran for higher office, he grudgingly accepted the counsel of more pragmatic folks like me, and modified his position to support civil unions rather than marriage, which he would term a 'sacred union,' " Axelrod writes. http://time.com/3702584/gay-marriage-axelrod-obama/

PartySick 174,748
He remains the first name that comes to mind when someone asks me "hey, what Republican do you not hate?" I can live with this answer. His personal beliefs can stop him from agreeing with it until the cows come home, that doesn't affect anyone but himself and he's entitled to his beliefs (even if they are extremely disagreeable). The important thing is that he's no longer pushing to support discrimination Whimsical bitch
DeleteMyAccount 11,881
9 hours ago, SKANK said: Yeah, remember when Kasich said, "I'm a Christian, and so although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman..." or "I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. Now, for me as a Christian, it is also a sacred union. God's in the mix." Oops, that was Barack Obama. Democrats had flimsy explanations for their sudden "evolution" on the issue of gay marriage. In reality their "evolution" was fulled by public support. It was a political calculation. Kasich's "I went to a gay wedding" is no different then Obama's "I got close to White House staffer's who were in same-sex relationships." Kasich's stance on the issue of gay marriage is identical to the stances held by mainstream Democratic politicians a few years ago. In his private life he does not support gay marriage for religious reasons, but he will happily attend a gay wedding and he will not fight the legal progress of marriage equality. This is the ideal step forward for Republican politicians. Stop kvetching. Unless Obama spent time trying to deny gay marriage through policy making and his own agenda, then I don't really see a similar case. It's not that Kaisch or Obama was in support, it's more about how quickly they evolved in relation to the public. I can't speak for Obama, but Kaisch's case is just annoying. We heard what the man say about his husband about how Kaisch tried to keep them apart through his policy. I don't recall Obama campaigning and maintaining policies about such topics. If he did then I guess I will have to drop my support.

If he did then I guess I will have to drop my support. Obama instructed the Justice Department to defended the Defense of Marriage Act in court, which they did by comparing gay marriage to incest and child marriage. So Obama did in fact spend the first few years of his presidency using policy to deny gay marriage to Americans. Though, a few years later, he would stop supporting DOMA. Obama and Kasich's history on the issue of marriage equality are different. Obviously Obama's history is preferable. But they both used their Christian faith as the reasoning behind not supporting marriage equality, and they both cite exposure to gay couples in their personal life as the reason for their evolution on the issue. 9 hours ago, En_Sabah_Nur said: Nevermind....
