babs 5,093
Ann Coulter is disgusting to me, but of course she has the right to speak her mind. Is up to people to be stupid enough to listen to her or not. Bernie's right, y'all can stay pressdt.

Whether or not you agree, she's a very smart woman who has the right to be heard. There's nothing smart about racism and white supremacy. She can talk from her home. She has right wing media. Luiz 4,253
saying religion was wrong and that LGBT should be able to marry was once hate speech. going against the bible and its interpreted sanction of slavery once could have been construed as hate speech. the freedom to offend is important to protect since some of those offensive ideas are now common sense due to our allowance of the freedom to express offensive speech. cant protect only the speech that agrees with our liberal agenda. we should embrace the attemprt by the right to give speeches because it affords us the perfect platform to debate them during Q&A portions of their presentation. we need to stop meeting their ideas with useless noise and violence and meet it with intellect and refutations. you only kill bad ideas with better ones and we should use every opportunity to present them. I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.

Thousands of men died for this right to free speech. Uh, filtered free speech works in every other western country in the world, it will work for the US. Hate speech is illegal in the UK, Europe and Canada, political ideas are not repressed in these countries either.. Blind support of hate speech is a thing of the past. JanPianoMusic 730
He is absolutely right. Nobody has been forced to listen to her - people are free to choose not to attend! Determining one's right to speak in public based on their beliefs does not sound democratic to me. It's not as if she is advocating genocide or eugenics, is it? You will never please everyone. I don't want to live in that kind of society. That's fake freedom.

Bebe 17,289
Like it or not, Ann Coulter is a popular commentator Like it or not this isn't some fringe person on the sidelines. I understand why people would want to shut her down, but I'm always more on the side of free speech. At least at a venue like Berkeley there would be the opportunity for opposition, there would be an opportunity to counter the BS she spews, there would be the opportunity to challenge her. They can protest all they want, but let her speak. Stopping her from speaking at universities isn't going to make her unpopular and stop people from believing her ideas... It only creates controversy that brings more eyeballs and ears to her and it only pushes her to venues that are friendly and will provide little opportunity for criticism and opposition. Like Bernie said "Ask her the hard questions. Confront her intellectually" - that could happen at Berkeley. Instead this is going to be plastered on the news, a whole bunch of people are going to look her up and see what she is about, she is going to be able to spread her message further and she will only be able to speak in friendly environments that offer little to no opposition for her.
