holy **** i didn't but then I read the thread title and it clicked! she would hit those high notes at the beginning of the song and the pre-chorus sounds very mariah ish.

It did when I read on twitter about it. But I got over it. The song screams Mariah to me now.

Gaga's R&B vocals have always given off this TLC meets Mariah vibe. I feel like she'd do good working with DJ Mustard, at some point. She should do more R&B.

Totally, "90s Mariah Carey" was the first thing on my mind when she started.

I even thought those high pitched synth sounds at the beginning were human vocals, you know, the so-called whistle register that Mariah is known for.

I get tons of 80s/90s R&B vibes from it.  In fact this could easily be a spice girl tune from back in their heyday, it sounds like 2 become 1 a bit.
