Bette Davis 12,742
Berkeley becomes the second city in California to ban the sale of fur. "The ordinance, sponsored by Councilman Kriss Worthington, was spearheaded by the Berkeley Coalition for Animals and approved by the City Council on Tuesday night, making Berkeley the second city in the nation to prohibit fur sales. West Hollywood passed a similar ban in 2013 that has survived a legal challenge from several luxury retailers, according to the Berkeley Coalition for Animals. Coalition members said animal advocates support the ordinance because they want Berkeley to refuse to participate in the exploitation and slaughter of animals. “To protect these innocent animals, we need to curtail the demand for their fur,” coalition founding member Amy Halpern-Laff said in a statement. “We applaud the council’s leadership in helping to end this cruel industry,” Halpern-Laff said. Berkeley Coalition for Animals founding member Jay Quigley said in a statement, “The millions of poor foxes, rabbits, minks and other animals who are bred for their fur typically spend their entire lives in cages barely bigger than their bodies. Then they’re slaughtered by gassing, neck-breaking or electrocution.” Quigley said, “This brutal industry is radically inconsistent with Berkeley’s values.”" https://www.google.com/amp/sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2017/04/06/berkeley-council-votes-to-ban-fur-clothing-sales/amp/ https://furfreeberkeley.com Cold as ice cream, but still as sweet. If you're vile enough to support a horrible industry of torture and misery you can always find a way, but it's still a bold stance against animal cruelty and abuse Cold as ice cream, but still as sweet. Its main market are Russia and China. Restricting people to do stuff only gonna jump start the market now. Silly folks. Gaga Monster 13,001
I think that is wrong. Fur is a horrible thing, extremely cruel, I would never ever wear fur and can not imagine why anyone would ever wear it. But come on, banning everyone from buying it, that is communist. People have the right to buy what they are going to wear and it is not the governments business to tell people you can't buy a piece of clothing GGD Presidential Elections

No one gives a damn if someone wants to wear clothing made of cotton, linen, polyester fleece, acrylic, cotton flannel, etc, but fur is different. It's not just a "piece of clothing", it's the skin of a formerly living creature that was denied humane living conditions and anally electrocuted, skinned alive, based, or bludgeoned to death. Yeah I 100% am against fur and the cruelty behind it, but if you are going to ban fur why not ban uggs, purses, and high heels that are all made from skinned animals. It makes no sense and is wrong for the government to tell someone you can't buy a piece of clothing when other clothing is just as cruel as it. It just puts people out of work and is hypocritical. I agree that those other products are cruel and should be banned but banning those aren't politically possible at this point. I'm just happy something got done.
