Edonis 28,950
Well it looks like Ghost in the Shell has flopped (at least domestically) and will cost the company a hefty penny of $60 million. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2017-04-07/deadline-ghost-in-the-shell-film-will-lose-at-least-usd60-million/.114496 "Entertainment news website Deadline reported on Wednesday that Paramount Pictures' live-action Ghost in the Shell film is tracking with a US$60 million loss." "The film has so far underperformed at the box office after opening in the U.S. and some international markets on March 31. As of Wednesday, Box Office Mojo reports the film has earned US$23,072,150 domestically, and US$50,621,469 internationally for a global total of US$73,693,619. The film opened in Japan and China on Friday. Deadline attributed the film's loss to a large production cost that did not reflect the popularity of the franchise, no corporate executive to guide the film, the film's marketing campaign, bad box office performance projections in China and Japan, the film's whitewashing controversy, the challenges of adapting anime and manga to live-action, and poor reviews." So apparently it wasn't just the whitewashing allegations that hurt the film's reputation. Is anyone surprised? What do you guys think? Did anyone see it? Do you think it's worthy of the flop? Personally, I think it is. The movie was boring, had a weird revenge kill vibe going on, and the twist regarding the major's mother made every race allegation 10 times worse not a good way to handle whitewashing allegations But at least some of the special effects were pretty Anyways, discuss. She's stunning But I really don't get why they didn't cast an Japanese woman for the lead (or at least and East Asian woman). I get that they wanted traction with ScarJo bringing in an audience but still. It didn't work out tbh
CautiousLurker 19,471
That's sad - an artist I really like, Maciej Kuciara, worked really hard on this film. He said he produced his best concept art work yet for this project - guess it shows since the film is pretty much universally praised for the look... It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!

Maybe he'll get rewarded by a nomination or two at some sort of award show? It's not entirely unheard of for "flop" films or movies that have mixed to negative reviews have nominations for filming, special effects, etc. The visuals were nice in the film, I'll give it that much credit. TimisaMonster 31,073
Not surprised...marketing was bad, the whitewashing was real, the story and history of the film was unfamiliar to an American audience, but even the asian market didn't care for it especially not having an asian female lead. Overall, Hollywood never learns that whitewashing and bad marketing won't make a hit movie just because you have an A-list actor Stream my new single, 💜"Heartbeat"💜, on Spotify! And I really wonder how directors and the people working on the film thought it would be a good idea to approach the whitewashing stuff in the manner that they did in the film it was really cringey and uncomfortable, especially when you could tell it was written into the script in lieu of those allegations
