She became very famous among pop music fans, bullied kids, and LGBTQ.  That's a small part of the public.  She was misunderstood by the much larger segment of the public.

I don't know, with Just Dance and Poker Face, and the whole Fame era she was universally famous and popular... Sure, she got "weirder" and more artistic since then, but even Bad Romance was an universal hit among everyone.

Yes.  For those who don't know, she explained that exactly that in both an Ellen interview and an Oprah interview.  She said her outfits and shows were to help the kids who were made to feel like they didn't fit in in HS.

Imagine the sacrifice.  She turned off a generation of the public who hated her freakish persona, just to help those kids.  This is the true measure of Gaga's kindness and who she is as a person.

Exactly. I don't think she ever intended for "us" to happen. She just wanted to make music but once we came into the picture, everything changed. The love she has for us is a deep visceral every cell in her body type of love. She was mama monster way before that became her nickname. We are as much of a part of her as she is of us. To the general public we just look like creepily obsessed fans but if they only knew of the love and dedication that's been put into us by gaga over the past 9 years. They don't understand that she was there for a lot of us when no one else was. She can be surrounded by 100 paparazzi and just give them the " omg go the **** away!!!!!" look but surround her with 100 monsters and she becomes like putty (soft and sweet). We have her wrapped around her finger 😍. We are her everything ♥️. Like you said she's made huge sacrifices in her career to help us become who we are today. If that isn't love then idk what is ♥️

I love you monsters. I'd be unfixably broken without you

I understand, but we think of "universal" and "everyone" from our POV, and yes she did seem to be universally famous.  But let me give you two examples.

My friends are GP.  They still could care less about Just Dance and Poker Face, and the Fame era,  They never liked her and can't get a freakish image out of their heads.  I am gradually getting some to at least accept her.

I have many jazz musician friends.  When Gaga seemed universally famous to us, I mentioned her jazz ability to them.  They said "Lady who?  Isn't she that weird person"  They live in the jazz world, and didn't care at all about Gaga.  Years later, C2C turned their heads.

The good news is, after so many special performances over the past 2-3 years, people are saying "I never knew she could sing"  or  "I never know she was talented".  The wonderful sound of the GP finally coming around.

This is true, she just wanted to make music but then discovered she had a way to help people.  The question is why?  Early interviews show that she was going to be a big star after Just Dance.  She had no professional reason to turn her attention to bullied kids and LGBTQ.  It had to be her upbringing that made her a kind, caring, and compassionate person, because that's just the way she is.  These interviews in chronological order show her going from someone trying to get a start in the industry to someone who gained enough reach to help people.

But that's anecdotal evidence.... you'll always find someone who thinks something, and then someone who thinks something else etc. The charts, the sales numbers etc prove she was universally accepted as a superstar.

True, it is from my personal experience.  It helps somewhat that is from the perspective of someone who was truly part of the GP during the first few years of Gaga's career.  The OP is about why people don't like Gaga, and I have some experience with that.  I didn't like her even when she was a superstar, until late in 2010.  But that's again, anecdotal.  I wonder if there are any polls about what percentage of the people like Gaga, and what percentage of the people listen to her songs.  That would be interesting.

Mhmm, no. People were ok with Gaga's weirdness until this happened, then it became too much for them to handle.

it shows the role of perhaps unconscious homophobia in her decline in popularity. this video was when she really solidified herself with an association to the gay community, it plays with gender roles, masculinity/femininity, and is when she begins to really bring in the religious themes. and in america at least, gay marriage was still not  even universally legal, dadt was real, etc. discriminatory legislation was real! and lgbtqplus rights were a hot controversy. then she came out with born this way, further emphasizing her politics of equality and people shut her down she was never as "big" since.

(just my theory on what really sent her away from the "gp")

Man I can't believe how much she's "grown up" over the past 9 years. Time just flies by. You're absolutely right. It had to be her upbringing because she had no professional reason to want to help the "underdogs" so to speak. I know people say it's creepy when I refer to her as my surrogate mama but she was there in all of the ways that my bio mom wasn't. In all honesty I want nothing more than to wrap my arms around her and just say "thank you for being there when no one else was". They say that God works in mysterious ways and I truly do believe that gaga is living proof of that. She has absolutely no obligation to do all that she does for us but she chooses to do it out of the kindness of her heart. She truly does restore my faith in humanity

I disagree because she was weird af when she came out, so it's not like she went from being gp friendly to too much to take, she always been intense in her appearance.  And at her peak, her music garnered more attention than her looks.

People probably don't like her because she went from the cool, trendy party girl with an out there sense of fashion to a gay activist, and almost seemed to pander to them, which made her the 'gay' artist, then her music, IMO don't get triggered, dropped in quality, and her fashion became more and more off the wall and perhaps tacky, and the gp turned on her, like they do with almost every pop star.

She'll rebound, the greats always have (madonna, MJ, Britney)

You got it completely. Gaga's popularity downfall started when she alienated the GP during BTW (song) promotion, it was just too much. She was everywhere 24/7 talking about LGBT community, their rights, etc. And because of her stance, the GP didn't identify to the crazy cute and extravagant artist anymore.

Wet Fire

You can't find pearls unless you go at the bottom instead of floating on the surface. That's what differentiates monsters from the dis-likers.

It literally happens to EVERY pop star, the question would rather be why not Gaga.

(Britney, Katy, Madonna, Jessie J, to just name a few)
