Joanne lacks soul

On a serious note...I do agree to a degree...lol

I feel Joanne was a rushed concept, because we were all expecting a dark pop album again from her and then out of nowhere we got a...Gaga country album? :wtfga:

I just feel that the music she made with Mark was sub par to her "signature" sound and didn't feel well thought out.

Even Perfect Illusion feels forced and out of place on Joanne...it lacks a real "effort" since the lyrics are very repetitive, the instrumental is "light" and very simple...

Then the rest of the album is ballads and country tunes trying to NOT be as described by Gaga but...it's a country album. Was she trying to say she at least did a COUNTRY album once in here career just to say so? "I've done pop, rock, jazz, now COUNTRY"...get what I'm saying?

Where are you people getting this "Joanne's a country album" ordeal? I'm not directing this towards you, so please don't take any sort of personal offense, but it pisses me off when people go "Why'd she make a country album?!"

Joanne is not a country album. The only songs on it that sound country are Sinner's Prayer, Million Reasons, and A-YO. Joanne Even then, Million Reasons and A-YO aren't really all that "country". A-YO's more funk/country-pop, and she just sort of has an accent during Million Reasons that make it seem sort of country.

I would also disagree in saying that Perfect Illusion lacks real "effort". Having repetitive lyrics doesn't mean that it lacks effort. Anyone could come up with lyrics, but the fact that Gaga purposefully chose to repeat the lyrics over and over again symbolizes that the illusion was so real, so perfect that it had to be real—at least, in her mind. The instrumental also isn't "light", it's heavy and is honestly one of her best instrumentals, ever.

Half of the replies in here arguing over if Joanne is country or not. :air:

As others stated, Joanne is her most emotional-bounding album to date... I don't care if it's a "flop," it is, hands down, her second best album after Born This Way.

:rip: @ people saying that Sinner's Prayer, Dope, and Angel Down have no emotion/soul :stalkga:

Maybe it lacks soul to you but not to most of us. Joanne makes me feel happier and taught me that vulnerability is a strength. Million Reasons is a sad song but it has helped me accept heartbreak and not afraid to cry even when I'm happy. Grigio Girls makes me want to spend as much time with everyone I love as much as possible and remind them they are loved. Come To Mama, Hey Girl, and Just Another Day are my go to songs to gain immediate happiness and joyfulness within myself.

This is the only Gaga album where I love every single song on the album. At first I hated A-Yo but now it grew on me. Sure A-Yo is just a fun pop song about having a good time but what's so wrong about that? Does every song have to have some deep symbolic message? The album is her most personal album to me and I personally can't wait to see her live in August to perform this beautiful album.

I feel the same way about MR, Grigio girls.

Stuff such as "one five ten lay a million on be before the end of the song" where gaga rhymes "me" with "song" just makes me doubt the existance of god.

You're entitled to your opinion and I truly respect your perspective. But no. "Lay a million ON" and "Song " were the words that connected.

And if you don't get that she's a Gogo Dancer asking for her tips (lay a million down!) I don't know what to tell you. Diamond Heart is iconic and a classic in my eyes.

You could've said another song NOT named DH, MR, Angel Down, Ayo, P.I. . . . Matter of fact the only song I don't care for is Hey Girl. I don't know what else to tell people who don't hear the greatness in Joanne but oh well your loss :ladyhaha:

Glad this is listed as an "opinion" because...

If you can't hear soul in Hey Girl, Diamond Heart, Angel Down, MR, the title track... yeah I don't really know what else to tell you, this album is her most organically soulful album yet. :awkney:

Most of the album is written in a plainer language than her previous style since it's influenced by Americana and folk music, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's without a soul or generic.

From your post, it sounds like you crave Gaga's more complex lyrics and themes. Gaga is similar to Shakira in that their lyrics are often odd, and very specific (Russian Hookers! Ear Condom, Disco Sticks etc.). Her lyrics seemed to get stranger with every new album, until this one.

I do like her weirdness, and her huge ambitions, even when the result is messy, it's still interesting (Sun Ra, greek mythology, RuPaul-esque camp, and K-pop style hooks all colliding in one song). There's less songs identifiable as something that "only Gaga could do", but at the same time the songs are emotionally stirring - the simple easy to miss  "Honestly...I know where you're going"  in Joanne feels more melancholy and effective than she's ever been. It's brilliant little moments like this that I love the most on Joanne.

It's fine if the album's style isn't for you, but to say it's lacking a soul is just inaccurate.

I disagree with everything in the OP. Absolutely all of it. Angel Down is one of the most passionate songs, full of soul that I've ever heard pretty sure, and the soulfulness doesn't end there. Come To Mama, Sinners Prayer, Just Another Day, Million Reasons, Diamond Heart, Joanne, Grigio Girls..... come on.

I didn't read this carefully on my initial read. Try looking up what slang rhyming is if you're that concerned about her rhyming "on" and "song" in DH. It isn't even a slant rhyme (I think), but there is nothing to suggest it's a bad rhyming scheme in my book.

I don't disagree that at times Joanne can sound "rushed" in it's productions. By that I mean some tracks sound like demos. However, as large a fan of folk music that I am, I have to recognize that this is part of what makes folk folk. It's raw, pure, unadulterated emotion with music as its vehicle.

Joanne certainly doesn't have to fit your musical tastes. Not even it's lyrical content. To suggest it has no soul though based on your subjective views is egregious. Nevertheless, I digress. They are your views and you are entitled to them.

thought that "soul" would be about "Image\look" or something but rip.

I think it's a special album. It's personal & some songs are diggin' down to new stuff we didn't now. Joanne (title track), Hey Girl... I think these are really special gifts.

Perfect Illusion, Diamond Heart & Sinner's Prayer are one of Gaga's most iconic timeless beautiful rich songs ever and this whole thread is wrong.

and I said it before and I'll say it again, A-Yo is A LOT better than Shake it Off imo. and it is, I know I'm right.

I said country-esque :laughga: A colloquial term for a song with similar vibes to more traditional country songs, which is what I was discussing with Timisa. But I agree with your statement, it does bear closer resemblance to folk music, akin to Johnny Cash.
