is Bad Romance really completely different to the other synth pop on there? I mean it's higher quality, but in terms of pure risk, dance songs were already a trend. I've heard that it was "Darker" and had maybe a heavier bass. Looking back okay yeah it's pretty different lol. k u right I talked myself out of disagreeing :)

This was thanks in part to the success of The Fame. Everyone starting trying to go for that sound and imagery. Of course along with the resurgence of EDM and electronic music producers as well.

Gaga's new tune — a snippet of which she recently debuted on SNL — isn't up to the star's trashy-chic standards: The booming beat feels oppressive, the wordless hook is a little annoying, and on the chorus- "I want your lovin', I want your revenge" — Gaga's emoting takes her into bad-Cher territory.

Never forget RS giving Bad Romance only 2 stars in the debut and now... fz7pAq3.gif

I still think it's going to be hard for her to ever top BR in terms of inspiration, risk-taking and sheer creativity.

It's so different

to me Bad Romance doesn't sound like a song, it sounds so strange, idk how to explain it.

They said How I Roll by Britney Spears was the song of the year back in 2011 so they really have no credibility for me. :air:

I mean i won't say it wasn't risky as hell

but shewolf, Funhouse, Sweet dreams by Queen B had a bit, tidy little bit of that dangerous/non-steryoptical sweet pop

And there was Disturbia..Which was a moderate big hit

pop girls were already going more dark and theatrichal

Just not so Rah rah rah and even more bringing eastern europe club scene, with over the top vocals. like damn, it's go broke or go home

It's a complete standout, there's simply nothing like that

It's funny how it was such a risk but now a lot of fans focus on wanting radio friendly singles. I don't know much about radio but this logic never made sense to me. 🤔

Off topic but that gif made me remember about the ARTPOP app. I loved it so much!

Even Applause honestly.

Exactly. Applause may be familiar territory as an EDM, but it was so different than any I had heard and was not what I was expecting. I did not care for it at first, but after a few listens it was such a bop and I was hooked and I never understood why it didn't snatch that #1 (I actually do, so this is rhetorical).

Let me just remind everyone how ICONIC the demo version of this song is, too.

Looking at that chart does make me sad that most of the stuff on charts today is dance, rather than pop or a mix of the two like pop stars were trying for back then. Yeah I know dance music is a type of pop, but like it was different then (even if it wasn't good) whereas now, most of them will either be some kind of house track or choppy vocal seeb EDM kinda song by a DJ you'll hear of a couple of times and then never again. Well at least that's what it seems like in the uk anyway haha
