Realistically, if you want gays to watch a TV Show, you have to have cute/handsome, somewhat charismatic gay characters. Even, Looking got cancelled because they did not have a Brian Kinney. All characters were semi-losers. About POCs gays, the moment character's storyline turns about being POC, it will lose ratings. Like the latino guy from Looking. If you want diversity, you have to keep it cool and sexually attractive, if that latino homo was son of a mexican drug lord instead of a mediocre barber with bad fashion taste, Looking might have not been cancelled. It was a tragic time for the LGBTQA+ Community (and it still is), and people who fought for this shouldn't be forgotten. A random barber from an undereducated family, badly groomed with thug-like dressing style. Classic undereducated family coming to the states to make a living without any dreams story. Son of a drug lord would be wearing Giuseppe Zanotti suits with Hublot watches, his cold-hearted charisma would have been radiant. I don't remember one TV show that depicted gay son of a drug lord. But since you considered it to be a stereotype, I assume you might have thought of thug son of back alley pot dealer. Well yes to some extent but not as significant as it is for gays but those are just my opinions, I do not say that they have any factual relevance. It is not only because of community's approach to it in my opinion. Conservative demographic that is repelled by sexual drive in media is significant for straight part of the society. It is not significant for gays because by its very definition, conservatism is based on ideas of preserving traditional social institutions which exclude gays. Being excluded from traditional institutions, gays developed a strong protest culture revolving around sexual liberation which I see as one of the main reasons why gay culture is so driven by sex. As a result of being oppressed minority for so long, I feel like gays have such defense mechanism against "loser" representation of gays on media that gays want to see "winning" gays, not "losing" ones. I put quotes because depending on the context winning might mean anything positive or losing might mean anything negative. Just as an example, QAF would probably not become QAF we know if it wasn't for winning characters like Brian or Justin, gays wouldn't watch a show focused on self-pity of Ted from that show.
