just read somewhere that an actor from Moonlight saw the envelope saying Moonlight won and got up on the stage to make the revelation. Which would make sense, because Warren Betty said he had the "Emma Stone" envelope, but then he showed the envelope saying "Moonlight" to the camera....

It almost looked like they were instructed to say La La land no matter what the envelope said.

And to cash in on those struggles just to win an award, that's not what this industry should be about.

Girl, what? I can't.

I don't think it's about cashing in on those struggles. There were films that captured the war torn Middle East that were also nominated. Even at the Grammys, no one once thought Lemonade was exploiting black struggle to win big during award season. I don't see any basis in your argument, honestly. But maybe I'm missing something. (PS I'm not coming for you, just don't understand your point)

what is moonlight about

From what I've read about it, the story of a young gay black man struggling with coming of age and coming to terms with his sexuality. Being gay is still a huge stigma in the black community, which is in part what makes this an important story, and now an important win.

You mean a movie that took every generic Oscar trope (young, black, gay, poor, abusive parents, drug addiction), compiled it into one by-the books, blatant Oscar bait film vs. an unconventional story with a magical air that pays tribute to the classic musical films of the 50s?

Not surprised it won, but it was totally undeserved.

Not that I've watched La La Land, but wasn't it utterly white-washed for a movie that took place in the 50s?

We can say awful horrible things about all movies.

Though what probably made it Oscar bait is the fact it was based upon the play "In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue".

We can say what we want. Awards don't mean anything really. I'm not sure if they're worth anything besides acclaim. I mean, I don't think the winners are financially awarded.
