Is Katy being "woke" the new "****ing derk"?

I love CTTR and I think the video is great, but when the song was first released (and now the video), media are rolling with the whole "Katy is woke!!11!" because of the message of the song and video.

I think we can all detect the underlying tone of sarcasm in all those articles lol, but I feel like they and we are gearing up for whatever Katy's version of American Life would be, just like we were all gearing up for a "dark" album because of her comments, burning of the wig, etc etc

Will it unfairly bite her in the ass once the album (featuring Bon Appetit :poot:) is released?

Yes. I am glad the video didn't end with some cringey montage of the park goers being #WokeAF.

"Woke" is so ****ing stupid:emma:

She's trying way too hard in my opinion. Like when she posted a pic of a black lives matter shirt and captioned it "Woke". It doesn't come off as genuine. A genuine person that cares about that issue wouldn't even care to caption something as impersonal as "woke".

Well, if the lead single is the only song with "political" stuff, my dislike for Katy Perry will be even stronger as I already hardly believe her honesty trying to share a message and see it more as a way to sell music when it's trendy to be political.

However an album purely about politics would be boring, particulary for Katy's audience who is mostly kids and teenagers. Even Madonna's American Life (that you talk about because I would NEVER compare their work) explores other subjects like Hollywood, wanting to fit it, Madonna's childhood... So hopefully critics will understand that.

I just feel like whatever political statements! she's trying to throw on our faces it's not gonna work because she's being very subtle about it. Just like female popstars posing with a FEMINISM thing on their backs and celebrities tweeting when it's convenient to them, but they know sh*t about the issues.

But isn't it ironic that the lyrics are like

"so comfortable living in a bubble bubble"

meanwhile she has been making bubblegum pop generic music and candyland eras for the past decade and never evolving???

Stay woke or get SHOOK

Im not even sure if I get what you mean tho

Before Prism was released, she said that the album was going to be "****ing dark", had dark lewks and aesthetic and in the teaser videos for the era she burnt the blue wig from California Girls. Then she dropped Roar (and Prism) and got dragged.

Now people are saying that she's "woke" because of her """"""political statements""""" and what she said at the Grammys about the song. But looking at the track record she's probably going to release a harmless pop album (which isn't a bad thing). So i'm asking if she's going to get dragged again

that's it :poot:

wasn't Dark Horse video supposed to be dark and about witches? but she decided to change it because she was afraid of backlash? (you know those bible thumpers bitch*ng about witchcraft :saladga:)

I want to get into but I have to stay OT :emma:

If she stays consistent in her political commentary, which is there in the video, yes. She will get dragged, like how Gaga was dragged during BTW, but she'll be respected for it. Music not the Bling etc etc. She'll have a cause. Gaga's entire identity was truly established to the public during the BTW era, where she stood up for the LGBTQ when Gay Rights were once again in the spotlight.

If she goes back to her bubblegum pop, yes, she will be dragged to the pits more than ever before, because this generation is all about political and social issues, and it's no longer possible to just dip your toe into the pool. If you're going to speak out against injustice, you better speak out.

ESPECIALLY when we see Katy herself realize she was part of the entire "blind utopia" system.

Katy either needs to 100 on this or take the backlash for not committing.

I'm actually excited for this era :lolly:

can someone show me the political references she did in the music video? I only saw a few messages about social media

In that thread and also in this page of the video discussion are some of them too:

Yes, this, she needs to do a whole era consistent to this theme. But I'm not really expecting it, tbh.
