Because Adele is good, but not great:

Where my frustration comes from is not in Adele herself. She's smart and successful and a good vocalist. I'm frustrated by how much she's celebrated. There are so many other vocalists just as good / or vocally stronger than her who don't get this degree of recognition or opportunity. I'm talking mostly about singers of colour. So. My frustration comes from the disproportionate praise we give her. Let's compare her to Gaga -- also a white woman, but she uses her privilege for justice. Gaga doesn't just sing, she is a quadruple threat and she also speaks up for minorities and marginalized groups. Adele has only done the BARE MINIMUM of advocacy, even with her huge platform. So. I'd just like to see this much praise, money, awards, opportunities, liberties and recognition given to singers of colour, who have similar capabilities and mediocrities. The only one who receives this much love is Beyonce, but she is required to do the MOST (sing, dance, act, perform, costumes, sets, effects, branding...). It's not as if Adele does much more than stand there and sing (and she's not phenomenal to be frank, in both her vocals and her "voice"). Yet we are so willing to give her all our hearts and money, where we won't even give people of colour a chance. That's all.

Adele is a gracious and polite spirit and a true singing talent, she is not Jesus or even The Pope. Adele should never downplay her talent and success. She should feel proud and honored and happy and not feel as she owes any apologies for her success to ugly acting fans of her contemporaries.

Adele has deserved and worked hard for all of her success and recognition. Little Monsters were so ugly to Adele and her image that night, Gaga even felt the need to speak up and congratulate Adele on her winning, probably out of embarrassment of her fan's ugliness and online shaming and also, for her true love of Adele and her song catalogue. Gaga is a true fan of Adele and Adele likewise, of Gaga.

how many threads will we have that demean the profundity of Lemonade? Lemonade is revolutionary in its message, its craft, its release, and its format. It's something that will push the industry forward. It touched women, especially black women, in a multitude of meaningful ways. Born This Way was incredible and full of self love protest anthems, but it wasn't on the same level as Lemonade. 

To answer your specific question though, Adele had a deep personal connection with lemonade and thought it was the album of the year in her heart.

Honestly I think it's because 21 was her first big era and was actually her time to shine. She should've addressed Gaga and BTW imo but I can see why she didn't. She didn't know her then and honestly had a different perception of her as well. I think now Adele probably respects Gaga and her music much more than she did. 25 clearly wasn't her time to shine and she knew that so she said something.
