Why doesn't Katy Perry evolve?

Katy just sticks to her brand... Which is cute, fun, and catchy music with eccentric and colourful visuals and it works because it is what we expect from her. Sure, she matures and changes her aesthetic with each album, but her body of work and discography is still cohesive. For example, I can put Dark Horse on Teenage Dream and it would still fit, or I can put Hot n' Cold on Prism and it would still work.

On the other hand, look what happened when Gaga suddenly switched from pop to country... Both the public and the fans were caught off-guard and she just lost her touch. Can I put John Wayne on The Fame Monster? No. Can I put Paparazzi on Born This Way? No. Can I put Alejandro on Joanne? No.

'Cause she sells as a fun popstar. And she's afraid of losing her audience.

To me, these kind of artists become boring with the time because they don't do something fresh. I love Pink but her new songs sound the same as her previews ones (Max Martin formula).

to stay relevant you don't take risks (like gaga, she's always taking risks)

you just make generic boring ****, that everyone will eat up and bop to for a while.

Well if she is happy then good for her. But she will never be seen as talented or be acclaimed. Artists should always aim to be creative because music is art.

Music is art, exactly, and so art that you enjoy may not be the same as everyone else's. An artist shouldn't need to change their art for being seen as talented or acclaimed and just because you don't see her as talented or creative that doesn't mean that everyone else doesn't :spin: You're here saying artists should do this and should do that, well how about they just do what they want to, I don't understand why you're imposing things onto them :duck: Let them be, if her art isn't for you then there are many people out there whose art you will resonate with. Just as there are many people out there who resonate with Katy Perry's art

I think Katy Perry has very little creative control, and the record company's priority is to sell records. Sure, she contributes with some lyrics, so they can put her up as a co-writer, but her songs are written by guys like Max Martin. I read "The Song Machine" by John Seabrook, and it describes the creation of several pop songs, "Roar" among them. I don't think Katy Perry had much to do with the songwriting there. Max Martin and Dr. Luke wrote the track, Bonnie McKee was the topliner (the one who comes up with the melodic hooks). The fact that all those three are credited makes it extremely unlikely that Katy Perry contributed much, besides lyrics.

I'm not saying all this to criticize her, I like her quite a lot, actually. Not as much as Gaga, but I have about 10 Katy Perry songs on my playlists.

To be honest, we don't know how Lady Gaga divides labor between herself and the co-writers either, but we know she started as a songwriter, and she has changed a lot, so she seems to me to have a lot of creative control.

No but seriously.

Rihanna released a new album, she only does urban music.

Adele released a new album, she only does ballads.

Britney Spears released a new album, she's doing what's trending, she's not a risky pop star.

Kanye West, same.  Just name any artist who dares to release new music and happens to be more successful or get more acclaim than Lady Gaga at that specific moment, and he will make a thread about that calling them risk-averse.

Can we please stop bringing other artist down, and then crying when other people do it to Gaga? Please, for god's sake, this is so annoying.

This is a forum though. Is all about analysis.

That's what you say every time someone calls you out, always. Just take the L like a champ and accept that all your threads follow a pattern which is calling artists risk-averse. People try to argue with you and you keep moving that goalpost.

In other words afraid of loosing success?

Yeah Gaga has acting and jazz stuff once she fails but Katy just revolves around popular stuff

We have not listened to Katy's new album so we really don't know if it's different from her past work yet. I think it WILL be different this time because as far as we know, Dr. Luke is not involved in the process of it. I think you should wait until you come up with that conclusion.

As for her other albums, Teenage Dream was so successful that they probably wanted to make money off that trend again and they did, it's like her signature sound/image so if it works, you do it.

Other than that, I think we all should just enjoy whatever we want to listen to. All artists are different and there's no way you can compare Katy to Gaga, Rihanna, Britney, etc.
