A lot of the style in teenage dream was synth pop/electro pop because by that time Gaga had made this sound popular.

Yea but Katy hasn't really let it go...

I edited my post, I was referring to the op. All he does is downplay artists' work.

So I can't criticize anyone then?

Well, to be fair Katy Perry is not the only one who refuses to evolve.

I wholeheartedly believe this and we shouldn't be giving Katy so much slack

I feel she doesn't realize that she isn't evolving

maybe in her head all her albums and songs are different

I feel she does realize she isn't "evolving" but that she doesn't mind not evolving at the same time. If anything, I feel Katy appreciates pop music more than anything other kind of music and that's why she doesn't really expand beyond

In other words, Katy's the Californian girl next door that listens to top 40, some John Mayer/Ed Sheeran-esque feel good acoustic music, and rap on occasion, and Gaga is the girl with the glasses that listens to all kinds of music and grows up to impress everyone who doubted her originally

but you just said her formula kept working for her? TIHWD and Birthday both underperformed for her standards

It does work for her. Not every song can top the previous one, but 3 singles that didn't do extremely well in an album era that was very successful is OK.

I enjoyed TIHWD, Birthday, and Unconditionally very much, even if they didn't chart as well as other songs from her. I enjoy katys music because it's just easy, throw away, feel good music. Not everything needs to be deep, meaningful, and experimental.

That is what I am saying. Her music feels like the same song with a reskinned popular genre.

You can, but that's basically all you do, take your own advice and evolve. If you want, that is.

She can evolve with just pop music though.

One of the Boys and Teenage Dream and PRISM are different though :emma: The single choices mostly remain fun and catchy but when you delve into the album tracks it's clear that there's quite a difference. PRISM's second half is full of great deeper songs that aren't like Waking Up in Vegas and California Gurls and This Is How We Do, just as Teenage Dream has deeper songs like Pearl and Who Am I Living For.

Not all of her songs are deep and mature but then no pop star's is really at the end of the day :laughga: Another thing is that I don't understand why artists need to change and evolve anyway (even though I think that Katy Perry has), they should just be releasing what they're passionate about. Whether that's in the same ballpark as their previous ventures or not shouldn't matter, they don't need to actively be changing their sound if that's not what they feel on a deeper level

Maybe she's making the music that she enjoys making. If you don't like it, don't listen to it. If you like it, listen to it.

Without Britney they won't be any Katy though. :awkney:
