Radical alt-right Christian terrorist Alexandre Bissonnette faces six counts of first-degree murder and five of attempted murder, but has not been charged with any terrorism-related offences, despite Sunday's attack being widely condemned, including by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as a "terrorist act" against Muslims.

Bissonnette’s now deactivated FB page showed he was a right-wing anti-Syrian refugee troll & among his likes were Trump & Marine Le Pen.

When asked on Tuesday why Bissonnette was not facing terrorism-related charges, Thomas Jacques, a representative of the prosecutor's office, replied: "The charges laid correspond to the evidence available." 

Prosecutors added that all of the evidence was not yet ready and Bissonnette, a 27-year-old anthropology and political science student at Laval University, was set to appear again on February 21.

I think people tend to mix things up when it comes to terrorism. Terrorism can be seen as a social and political phenomenon, and also as a pure criminal offence. 

The context of the act can be tagged as terrorism, but you need to link it to an actual criminal offence, which has a specific actus reus and mens rea. If they dont have the evidence to support it, then they cannot charge him with terrorism charges, despite the context and the social and political effect on the population.

You still can say that he is a terrorist. You don't need a court to acknowledge it formally. 

And also where did you get the info he was a christian? Nowhere it is reported that. people are jumping to conclusions and its deleterious.

Well this wouldn't fit the "only muslims/people from the Middle East are terrorists" narrative so of course not. No surprises here but that doesn't make it any less disgusting.

Why not? According to experts, there could be several reasons. 

“It poses two extra burdens on the Crown in terms of proving what was in the mind of the accused at the time of the offence,” said Alana Klein, a McGill University criminal law professor.

“If he wasn’t charged with terrorism it’s because they don’t have the evidence to justify it at this point,” said Louis Morissette, a forensic psychologist, criminology expert and Université de Montréal professor.

“It doesn’t mean it won’t come,” he added. “Investigators will look into his computer or documents at home. They’ll look at his social media accounts or any notes he’s written. Even the books he had in his room.”

Bissonnette also appears to have acted alone, which can disqualify him from most terrorism offences, said Kent Roach, a University of Toronto law professor and expert in anti-terrorism law. “A truly lone wolf attack cannot result in most terrorism offences,” he wrote in an email response on Tuesday.

Terrorism charges carry a lesser sentence than murder and would be served concurrently with a life sentence.
