Oriane 19,662
Applause MV : Expressionism in the backgrounds (The Cabinet of Dr Caligari particularly) Outfit : Movie The Seventh Seal Tim Burton for the general style + the Mad Hatter (in the style) Marilyn Monroe of course Clown : mix between Pierrot and Arlequin Venus by Botticelli of course Apparently the gloves are a reference to a photoshoot by Janet Jackson Everyone sees a reference to Swan Lake or Black Swan but I don't see how it could be here. But a black swan is a symbol for something different, out of place, I think it's more this. For the purple outfit : an Indian goddess or something like this I think... And I forgot : Alejandro references the movie The Night Porter. You popped my heart seams, all my bubble dreams
blackstar 11,488
Fashion! is actually Let's Dance 2.0 Fashion! Step into the room like it's a catwalk // Let's dance to the song they're playin' on the radio Fashion! Singing to the tune just to keep them talking // Let's sway while color lights up your face Fashion! Walk into the light, display your diamonds and pearls in mine // Let's sway sway through the crowd to an empty space Also "Boys Boys Boys" was inspired by Motley Crue’s "Girls Girls Girls" "I wanted to write the female version of Motley Crue’s ‘Girls Girls Girls,’ but with my own twist. I wanted to write a pop song that rockers would like." Dilated, falling free in a modern ecstasy

I think the purple outfit is more ice /balkan folklore princess as some people would describe this show: (this is john galliano 2009, the show even has the same light tunnel) Walk down the runway but don't puke, it's okay. You just had 10 donuts today. Without frosting.

For an artist who references other artists as much as Lady Gaga, I think it's strange that this should be the song someone should complain about. But I don't know the video for "Express Yourself" all that well, so maybe there are some visual references, for all I know.

How are they similar, except for the generic chord progression, which could have been borrowed from hundreds of songs?

Oh, my baby, how I love your legs.” I love the Beatles but did not know this! Indeed "today I found out"
