AURA 2,890
Chicago. LA is dirty and smelly, NYC is a huge adjustment and I wouldn't recommend moving straight to NYC
JustAnotherDay 8,402
It really depends on what you want to do, LA is better for the entertainment industry, NYC is better for business. was NickARTPOP

I 100% agree. Both are huge centers for art though. In my opinion NYC is for people who enjoy really fast-paced things. LA is a big city but it's really more laid back. I prefer LA and don't think one city is better than the other but it's all a matter of what you're into.
Bette Davis 12,742
Although those two cities get the most attention, I wouldn't want to live in either. I would rather visit NYC, but if I had to pick one to live in, I would pick LA even though I hate it. There are so many other US cities that are more livable with just as much, if not more, charm and character. San Francisco and Seattle are my favorite US cities Cold as ice cream, but still as sweet. Decodekid 27,906
New York is better, you can walk around, you can always find something to do, you can be yourself and everyone is minding their own business. LA is overrated, when i visited, everyone just gave me dirty looks and it takes A LOT of time to get to places In NYC you can get to places every easily, veeeeryy Long Live Gretchen

pedrohemg 7,802
I don't want to be disrespectful to NY but that city isn't a place to live. You can go there and spend a few days, but that's all. Los Angeles is great, you can live there but I'm sure you can find better cities to live in California like San Francisco.

San Fransisco is amazing but its THE most expensive city in the country to live.

socotra 3,292
They're radically different cities, so it all depends on what you're looking for. As an LA native, the weather is all it's cracked up to be. Even in January, it's warm outside and you can go out in a T-shirt and shorts. "Los Angeles" isn't so much a singular city as it is a massive conglomeration of people within the LA Basin. Unless you're in Downtown, there's little that distinguishes Los Angeles the city from Los Angeles the area. You can easily slip into what's legally LA from South Gate or Inglewood and not know it. That contrasts with New York, where you know if you're in the city or not, which borough you're in, etc. (the only exception possibly being Queens/Brooklyn and Manhattan/The Bronx, where the borders can get fuzzy sometimes). LA truly is the entertainment capital of the U.S. It's situated within an hour drive of the beach, mountains, desert, and plains/grassland/valley. That isn't the case in New York, where it's the same type of climate and geography pretty much along the entire coast (and New York beaches are not like Californian beaches), so if you're a nature person, LA's the place to go. The main issue for LA is everything is super spread out and it takes forever to drive from place to place. Everything is much more compact in New York and it's a walkable city, whereas you definitely need a car to get around in Los Angeles. New York gets kind of a stinky smell in the summer because it gets hot and the trash gets heated, which isn't much of a problem in LA. On the flipside, LA's smog problem is disgusting and New York doesn't seem to suffer as much from it. In NY, you have definite seasons. In LA, you get one long spring/summer season, with occasional rain. The coldest it typically gets is around 50-60 degrees. NY (imo) has better food and restaurants. LA only has better Mexican food. LA's transportation system is terrible. That's kinda the surface of it. I personally think New York is the better city for people who like the hustle and bustle of a city, with a super exciting urgency where it seems like everyone has something to do, a place to go. Los Angeles is more suited people who like a more chilled, slower environment. Chicago is a nice compromise between the two, btw, and hella less expensive than either.
