Oivind 287
I think it's easy to believe. Joanne is not the kind of music most young people wants. Even if she made dance pop like she used to, it might not have been what the public wants. It probably wouldn't, actually. Look at the Billboard #1 hits in 2016. One Dance by Drake spent 10 weeks at #1, a song which almost has no melody. Closer by The Chainsmokers spent 11 weeks, and Work by Rihanna spent 9 weeks at #1. They don't have very strong melodies either, and I think that's the point. 2016 is probably a reaction to previous years' catchy dance pop, the kind of music Lady Gaga is good at making. People probably want music which is chill and releaxed, not music which makes you want to sing along and dance. The only #1 song from 2016 I find catchy is Can't Stop The Feeling by Justin Timberlake, and it was #1 for 1 week only. Cheap Thrills by Sia is OK (I have high respect for her, I'm just not a big fan of her music). This reminds me of the fact that Toxic by Britney Spears peaked at #9 on Billboard. Almost all the songs above it on the charts were hip-hop, so I guess hip-hop was the hot thing in 2004. It debuted at #1 in both the UK and in Norway, though. Maybe this tells us that US teenagers are more concerned about what's the hot genre at the moment than teenagers in Europe, so maybe a good dance pop album would have done well on the charts here, even in 2016. But in USA, I don't think it would. Anyway, she didn't make a good dance pop album, she made a good rock/country/pop album, and it probably wouldn't have been a big hit, no matter when it was released. And that's OK with me.
