sipthistea 21,099
Because she had a massive peak in the begining of her career. She was indeed #1 on everything. Then others started trying what she was doing, people got tired of it (Gaga too) and the downfall was unavoidable. Plus, there were problems between Gaga and her manager. Pop Art 1,773
Yes actually. Although her sales and stats during Born This Way indicate otherwise, there was a pretty big shift in her reception by the GP between The Fame/The Fame Monster and Born This Way, a shift I believe wasn't properly reflected in sales until ARTPOP. This is because Born This Way was always going to be a success since it followed up two of the biggest eras in history, but, as I said, the public perception of "Lady Gaga" dropped hard in 2011. That was the year it became no longer "cool" to openly listen to her music or talk about her positively. Although there's no way to tell for sure why this happened, I personally think a big part of the reason was the music. People were expecting the fun dance beats and catchy hooks they came to know Gaga for, but...they just didn't get them, at least in terms of singles. And if they did get them (through Judas), they were so cloaked in religious imagery and references that even the catchiest of hooks would still be a turn off for a good number of people. Although music critics were, for the first time in large numbers, openly against Gaga during 2013, ARTPOP (and especially Do What U Want) was the first time in a while Gaga was "hip" (no pun intended), the first time in years people didn't dislike her for her current actions/sound (as was the case in 2011) so much as they passively dismissed her because of her previous "antics" that just seemed reductive (for the lack of a better term) at the point. This is not to say that Gaga should always aim for commercial success/cool points, but the question is if Born This Way (which I love by the way) is what led to Gaga's commercial decline, and, for me at least, the answer is clearly yes. Bradley 59,023
2011 sales and 2013 sales should not be compared. Music is declining and Anti is considered successful even though it didn't sell much. Music-consumption in 2011 was popular.
Leeo 2,366
It's a big thing at all. The whole Judas x You and I sucess thing: You and I was basically a song that was really "USA" (the sound inspired by country and rock and yeah) while Judas is electropop (dance\electronic\EURO pop song). Y&I did better on USA while Judas was better WW (p.s. Judas is the most viewed vid from BTW ). ARTPOP wasn't like, a failure like people print it around. It was frustrating for the fan standards and it made the album look bad: the app, the DWUW\Venus single switch... and the album just died right after the release because the promo kept going til only like December 2013 (the voice I guess?) and then... nothing til March 2014 with G.U.Y. and that flawless ARTPOP live. The GP ended up supporting applause, the song spent all these weeks on the top10 of Billboard. DWUW was on the way to turn into a good hit but the song just... it just didn't work nnn. I think in the end, she just wanted to finish everything and move into the next one, into new songs and like... a new "chapter" in her life.
Pacify Him 9,073
Blind unsupportive little monsters tearring that album left and right unable its 'one of a kind' potential is the cause (but they'd rather support basic Joanne lol) The era woulda been massive. It's very Björk-ish in style I’m getting on your nerves

I don't know why people dont get it. She was way to big. Sooner or later her fame would have to fall back. Gaga couldn't go any further after BTW tbh. She was so massive at the time. Katy took years to reach Gaga's level. She peaked in 2013 while gaga peak was like... 2 years after she started (2010-2011)
Vergil 2,296
In my case was because of itunes festival. And I noticed the album was not finished so I did not buy it. I bought Applause and Venus tho.

That being said, I think the reason why ARTPOP didn't do as well as everyone expected it to do was because of poor management. They waited too long and didn't let Gaga do what she wanted to do; She wanted the raw and ragey Aura demo to be the lead single, they rush released Applause. She wanted to be way more experimental, they got rid off all the trailblazing songs and put (great but) simple pop music on the tracklist. She asked for comfort after her hip injury, they didn't care because she wasn't making them any money. She wanted Venus as the second single, but they chose DWUW and promoted it poorly. I could go on, but the point I am trying to make is simple - she didn't get to do what she initially wanted to do with ARTPOP and that basically set the whole era up for underwhelm. ARTPOP is still my favorite Gaga album, but you can't deny that it had so much potential that got ruined by her fight with her team. Born This Way on the other hand was executed perfectly. The promo was MASSIVE and all eyes were on her before they even started the era.
Phlop 4,773
Yes and no. BTW turned a lot of people off but also gave her many fans. Her hip dilemma ruined it. Not being able to tour in the US made her somewhat forgotten. ARTPOP itself was just off, the management wasn't there and Gaga was just a mess. She'd randomly disappear mid era and it just didn't bode well. Then DWUW not getting a video just closed the coffin. Atleast we got the GUY video, but that was such a non event. The best thing from the era was Swinefest tbh. BYE

Factor in that she'd gone from you & I, teog and btw, deep songs with a soul and a purpose all the way to.... applause. A song with zero relatability, a metaphor for being an attention seeker and visual throughout ARTPOP that was very off putting. Weird for the sake of it. Promo for ARTPOP prerelease wasn't as huge as btw but it was fine. She attempted to regress artistically and everyone noticed. Interesting point. I agree with this, also adding in the factors of whatever the hell was going on with her management. It may not have had a huge effect directly with sales, but it definitely had an effect on her, causing her to lash out and hide away. 3 points in and ready for more

I mean it should have been released as second single... Same goes for DWUW, it could have been a smash hit with a good schedule. The rush released and the lack of video screwed everything up
