Was BTW the reason ARTPOP flopped?

Well even TEOG was a bad decision... I mean it should have been released as second single... Same goes for DWUW, it could have been a smash hit with a good schedule. The rush released and the lack of video screwed everything up

That's why they should stop doing promo singles when it interferes with the 2nd single, it just messes up everything

I think it's a combination of a few reasons. It's a long-winded response so I put it in a spoiler.

The sparknotes version is that her pop radio reputation had been blemished, other big releases decreased the amount of attention she got, and the messy release/promotional schedule killed any chance of keeping public interest high.
1) Alejandro, BTW, and then Judas killed her momentum on pop radio. Yes Alejandro was very successful and popular, but the music video was religiously controversial and prevented the single from hitting #1 on pop radio, ending her streak of 6 #1s. BTW accomplished this based on the hype, but it continued to push away conservative America and her cool factor began diminishing. Judas was simply the nail in the coffin for pop radio which is why she hasn't had a #1 on pop radio since BTW. Pop radio obviously helps advertise better than any promo spot since it's constant promotion.

2) Fall of 2013 had a lot of other main pop girls (i.e. Miley and Katy) and other big names (i.e. Eminem) releasing albums. Unfortunately, her eccentric, artistic vibe combine with a very messy promotional/release schedule prevented her from capturing the same amount of attention as she did with BTW.

3) Applause did great at increasing her momentum in the pop scene. However, her team's inability to recognize a hit before it's released to the market continues to hold her back. I love Venus, but  planning it as the second single over DWUW, which is much more commercial, was a setback. DWUW was looking to be a huge hit, and it would have smashed had it been planned as the second single. However, the messy release, the video scandal, and the management change happened causing Gaga to become depressed and uninterested in marketing the song. Radio spins decreased, her momentum stopped, and no song aside from a bonafide smash could have saved the era.
Edit: Sorry for the long post, I don't know how to use spoilers.

it boils down to homophobia and misogyny and that's a straight up fact tbh, her support of the LGBT community isolated her because it only became trendy to be pro-lgbt in 2013. Had she been a man with her eccentric ways she'd have been praised as a bonafide legend see: bowie, mercury etc vs madonna and many other pop females even today.

BTW's theme turned much of the gp off cause she became "too gay". Not to mention the reason BTW sold so much was cause it was riding off the success of TFM. She then took too long to release ARTPOP and applause was not relatable and had weird lyrics for the gp despite being a good song. Then her team split up and everything was starting to become messy just before it's release.

Because the GP is not here for the ARTPOP concept, they don't care about art in pop.. they just want easy life.. to listen to a song and that's it, next one on the list.. Gaga made it complicated for their stupid mind so they rejected her..

Where is the art though?

Part of the reason it flopped is because pop was overcrowded at the time. There were so many hugely-popular songs when Applause and DWUW came out that they barely got noticed. It caused the whole "Lady Gaga is irrelevant now"/"Lady Gaga is over" thing.

My friend knows how much I hate Roar and it came on the radio where he lives and he sent me a Snapchat of him singing along with it to taunt me, so I sent him one of me like :fthis: with Applause playing in the background (sadly had to play it off my computer since radio pays Gaga dust).

Because the kind of music she made was already dated in 2013 plus she took a break and new artists arrived in that year that took her spotlight also troy left her and her team of yes sayers was just trash

They're still trash today too

messy promo + cringeworthy concept + problems with her manager and label

they all contributed to that.

i really hope her team get their s**t together for the upcoming singles, there are too many good songs on joanne at least one needs to be a a hit
