Professionals say that kids know what gender they should be at age 3.

When I grew up always getting along with girls and being gay logic would have told me I was a girl If was given that freedom. Argument invalid.

a kid is not trustworthy when it comes to choosing as a minor a major decission that will sterizile them and affect them for life. It's stupid and irresponsable.

ps: what experts? 😒

Girl I never said kids should start to actually medically transition at that age..

I said its been known that kids know the gender identity they should be at age 3. There is a difference between sexuality and gender identity sis so I don't get why you're bringing "gay" in this argument :toofunny:

Here's a receipt but there are many scholarly articles on gender identity in children if you decided to not be so lazy and look it up yourself.

Oh, this is just a fabulous way to kick off 2017! :diane:

Thank you, NG...all that time I thought I had wasted in gender studies and social science training has somewhat paid off (although I work in retail :sharon:)

Also, to address the "there are only two genders" or "now I don't want to piss off all the millions of genders"--I agree, there is polarization in many aspects of it.  I try to take the middle road.  Like I know there are more than two genders, am sensitive to people's identities, but do not like condescending attitude that often accompanies the SJW/"you cis white male privileged educated blah blah blah."  Where is the middle ground, people?  So sad to see it disappearing (especially noticeable in 2016).  :icega:

Disgusting.

You shouldn't give a kid the responsability to make such a life changing decission  at such an early age. This Child started transitioning at 4!!!!

wrong at so many levels.

You do know that transitioning doesn't always begin with hormones or surgeries right? It could just mean she was referred to as a girl and was allowed to dress as a girl etc at the age of 4

to Joannester, your fears are misplaced. Children do not have this ability in reality. Parents do not actually know more about their children's gender than their own children, but still, its not like 3 year olds are going to the hospitals and asking for hormones or anything. I'm not sure if this is really a thing at all actually.

Social transitioning is what gagzus is describing here and to the best of my knowledge it is typically the suggested course of action in these situations. While young children can definitely know their gender identity by the age of 3 or 4, gender-dysphoric episodes do not always persist in children that experience them. Allowing children to transition socially is often a great sort of litmus test to see if it "sticks" into the onset of Puberty. While it is perhaps "best" if possible to transition early, hormonal transitioning and surgical transitioning usually happens in the 10s if not the teens for optimal results if thats what the individual wants. There are also things such as hormone blockers that can delay the development of secondary sex characteristics (facial hair, breast growth, etc.) if the individual wants those.

Parents of trans children often deal very closely with specialists and reach out to others with similar experiences. It would be irresponsible to handle the situation any way else

The sexuality card is relevant because we live in a society in which heterosexuality is the norm so attraction to the same sex is generally portrayed as a monopoly for people of the opposite sex. A kid may think homosexuality is a female/masculine  caratheristic (depending on their biological gender) and thus being confused by their feelings because they can't relate to other people of their gender.  it's difficult to separate gender from sexuality at an early age because desire is not developed and sexual attraction is more abstract than anything.

If you think about it, as a kid with apparent "features" of the opposite sex (being into men/women) and getting along with people of the opposite sex over your own sex (which is the norm) your natural feeling is that you might be happier as a female and rush to conculsions.

I'm all in for normalizing social transitioning to test the waters, even If waiting till they are 18 might make the phisical transitioning be less "believable" I think it's a necessary measure to prevent regrets etc.

But who cares if you grow your freaking hair long or wear skirts.

I don't know about hormone neutralizers so I don't have an opinion.

people confuse gender and sex, gender is socially constructed thing where as biological sex is not. You can choose your gender but when you change your SEX that's when you really become trans (which is why I don't see why it's called transgender as opposed to transex) i also don't see why as LGBT members everyone here isn't accepting it's a step forward if you ask me but I do draw the line when it's literally straight, white cis teens making stuff up to feel oppressed and valid, to me there are 3 sexes and 4 genders.

But you can also be trans without transsitioning. For example a mtf trans person's identity as a woman is just as valid whether she changed her sex or not. That's also why it's called transgender I guess.

Isn't gender identity an integral part of your personality and, therefore, not a choice? :oprah:

If anything, sex is the choice. While you're given one of the three biological sexes (XX, XY, XXY) at birth, you can change them on a physical level...physical because we have no way of changing chromosomes (yet? :hmm:)...which isn't really against your point, I'm just nitpicking

I think that word just came into being at a time where people saw gender and sex as the same thing. I guess at least people know what being trans* means so that's the important part

What would those be? Just curious

I'm convinced there's really no limit to the number of genders since there's really no limit to what labels people can attribute to themselves. The words are all just an effort to relate their personal feelings to societal norms anyway :laughga:

In the end, two gender identities may be nearly identical but if someone feels strongly enough to give it a different name, I have no problem validating and respecting that.

National Geographic hasn't been about Geography only for years. It is also about culture/identity in different countries and lifestyle. As a frequent reader of this magazine I can only applaud the National Geographic for this decision.

One of the captions also reads "The Shifting Landscape of Gender" which is a little bit of a tongue-in-cheek.

I haven't read National Geographic since the late '70s. It used to be very much about geographic topics—for example, tribes of the Amazon basin, or "the Koryaks of Kamchatka", or some Peruvian mummy, or Byzantine antiquities, etc. Sometimes they would throw in something about the Soviets, or lasers, or whatnot.

But certainly not a LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE :rip: what is happening!?

What in the world are you even saying? You honestly think kids think that they are a gender just because there friends are? Really?
