There's never been evidence of this. If it were true, Rise wouldn't have flopped and neither would have (somewhat) When we were young. I sincerely believe that whole "let's test singles" period was bs and ended up hurting her potential album sales and overall promo management. I personally loved Perfect Illusion but it is utterly undeniable that the majority that heard this song (and it not affiliated with Gaga) didn't like the song. Out of the 7 people I introtuced the song to, one person said it was "ok", with the rest saying it was unbearable. No performance on TV would have changed what people think about the song.
