Gaga is the same way too, switching back and forth from pop music and ballads. 1

But you can't deny Gloria and their whole sex-positive/nonbinary shtick was a cheap attempt to shock and create controversy rather than anything of actual substance. They spent nearly two years going out of their way to appear counterculture without saying or doing anything for the communities they were piggybacking on, and then when the attention died down they wen't right back to being a masc presenting torch singer. Like why the hell am I supposed to give a f*ck what Sam's pronouns are or how they present themselves when trans rights have been actively eroded in their home country at horrific speed and they've said NOTHING about it outside of an instagram story? Sorry, but Sam is opportunistic and selfish, and their pivot back to adult contemporary kinda proves it. 3

Sorry, just because Sam came to understand THEIR gender, and wanted present how THEY wanted and create music THEY like - that should mean they have to speak up on issues in the community they’re in? Do you not think that potentially Sam being so open with their gender is exactly why they now don’t want to bring more attention to it because of the amount of hate they got? You don’t have to like their music, but just because they’re part of a community doesn’t mean they have to speak out on the hatred being put forward against it - it should be the job of the people around them to show them love and support “non-binary schtick” - how can you say this and be a Gaga fan? I expect more from millionaire celebrities, and I'm not gonna apologize for that. "How can you say this and be a Gaga fan?" Easily. That woman has said and done more for the queer community AT LARGE than Sam ever has. 2

Expecting things from celebrities is fair, but surely you can understand that actually being IN a community that faces so much intolerance, some don’t want to make their public situation more dangerous Also, have you even done any research before engaging in quite a harmful rhetoric? Look below https://www.thepinknews.com/2024/06/04/sam-smith-pride-month-lgbtq-charity-the-pink-house/ How is it harmful rhetoric for me, a queer person, to suggest that a millionaire masc-presenting nobinary person should actually show up for trans people instead of just perpetuating deviant and overtly sexual imagery in mainstream media? Can you not see how harmful THAT was to trans people, especially in the UK? I'm in no way insinuating Sam is solely to blame for the rise in transphobia, but they ABSOLUTELY had a responsibility to protect the trans community and in my opinion failed to do so. 1

Sam is lowkey one of the most high profile trans/non-binary celebrities in the media and having that visibility is extremely important. Sure, people may have not liked how they presented, but that’s their experience - and that’s completely valid and true to the community they represent Once again, I gave you an example of how Sam has showed up for their community, here’s another: https://www.attitude.co.uk/culture/sam-smith-supportive-message-trans-fans-448877/ Tiktok: owenbybush

This is a promo image for their new album/era from late December: Is that not masc presenting? I'm not trying to police their gender expression btw, so don't bother trying to pivot into that narrative. Nonbinary people are valid and real, but I refuse to sit here and pretend they face the same level of threat and harm as a trans woman right now. And to argue otherwise is ACTUAL harmful rhetoric, because it diminishes the voices of trans women to try to share the oppression spotlight with them. As for your other example of "doing work" - thats the instagram story I mentioned earlier. Also from two years ago.
