SKANK 14,288
I can't deal with the amount of commercials during these things. Call me if they make a Pink Flamingos made for TV musical.

DXPE 924
it was cute! I thought Garrett Clayton and Dove Cameron gave the best performances. I feel bad saying this but Ariana did not do well. it seemed like she was playing Ariana Grande and not Penny

She did make me laugh though, and still gave a good vocal performance. Garrett and Dove were great. I liked Kristin as well, her acting and singing were on point (as expected). n0ne 13,105
I might have been over critical and bias, because it's 1 of my favorite musicals and I did the production in high school and really love the 2007 movie. But it was only alright. The choreo, sets, and costumes were the most consistent and polished things about the special. Overall the cast wasn't as strong as the 2007 movie cast. Edna was totally miscast in the special, me and my mom dreaded hearing her speak/sing. I didn't like some of the changes/cuts they did to some of the musical numbers/scenes. And the character development was horrible, especially in comparison to the 2007 movie. I kinda see this being the worst reviewed among the live musical specials. Especially about the casting of Edna, her voice was just . The 2007 film remains my favorite version of hairspray. The Unbannable Chanteuse
djBuffoon 12,123
Loved the Broadway show and really enjoyed the movie as well. Like all the NBC musicals, this one looked incredible but I thought it was very inconsistent from a performance perspective. Harvey Fierstein won a Tony Award for this very performance when he did it on Broadway, but his Edna did not come off as well here. Really disappointing. Maddie was a likable Tracy but lacked the spark and energy of the girls that played the role before her. Garrett Clayton, awful. Pitchy singing voice and bland acting. Not sure why he was cast. Ariana Grande was also pretty bad. She was too concerned with looking cute than being genuinely quirky. Kristen Chenoweth knocked it out of the park. A true professional. Dove Cameron, very good. Nailed the comedic bitchiness and has a surprisingly good voice. Jennifer Hudson was miscast. Her vocals were unbelievable, no surprise there. But her energy was super low during the acting scenes, and she seemed more like Seaweed's older sister than her mother. She had no sense of wisdom or gravity about her. Martin Short and the actor who played Seaweed, forgettable

I agree with everything else though, especially about Jennifer Hudson and Kristin. The Unbannable Chanteuse

I just think he came off a little twink-ish for this role, and his singing and acting were both flat
