Nigerian man sentenced to death for carrying Marijuana in Singapore

''The death penalty will claim another victim in Singapore when Chijioke Stephen Obioha, who is from Nigeria, is put to death at dawn on November 18. The Court of Appeals rejected a last minute appeal today, clearing the way for the execution to go forward.

In April 2007, Singapore authorities caught Obioha, an aspiring football player, with over two kilograms of marijuana. Under local laws in effect at the time of his arrest, the amount of drugs triggered the automatic legal presumption that he is a drug trafficker. At the time, the death penalty was mandatory for drug traffickers.

The Singaporean government aims for total secrecy when it comes to managing the executions it carries out, and this has particularly been the situation in Obioha’s case, which has lasted for nine years.

International human rights law sets out that the death penalty may only be used for “the most serious crimes.” Drug-related offenses that do not involve violence, like Obioha’s, do not fall under the threshold of “most serious crimes.”

Human Rights Watch joins the Singapore Anti-Death Penalty Campaign, Amnesty International, and other human rights organizations in calling for a world-wide moratorium on the death penalty, with a view toward its eventual abolishment. This should happen sooner rather than later, starting with Singapore. Unfortunately, change to Singapore’s death penalty laws is slow to come, and now Obioha is out of time.''

 

I've heard that Gaga was also addicted to Marijuana. Imagine if she brought that into Singapore unknowingly and got caught. You can all say bye to her.

Wouldn't that be sorta like bribery? Besides, the least punishment one can get for that is still life imprisonment regardless

Celebrities have the money to get away for almost everything. Sad but true. Plus I really doubt a country would want to deal with the problem with imprisioning a big name celebrity, so they'll just deport them and likely ban them. (No idea how strict the laws in this country are)

If that happens you can bet that they would get tons of sh!t for having double standards nonetheless. If that's the case I kinda wish something like this would happen. Just not with Gaga

1 kilogram = 1000 grams. It's a lot.

You shouldn't wish that to happen to anyone  and do you really think they would get backlash for not keeping to their laws or killing a celebrity over weed??

My friends (not me, no blunt will ever touch my lips unless blunt is euphamism for something else ) usually pay like $30 for an eighth, which means $30*8*2 kilos of weed would be $480, and $30 is a steal somewhat depending on its "dankness" (IDK what I'm even saying, I'm just parroting what I hear my friends talk about when they talk about that stuff). If you don't have your weed guy, it can cost like $50 for an eighth apparently, especially for people who cannot rate the grade of what is "good" weed or are all too new to the scene

Moral of the story, that's a lot of weed to have at one time on one person, but definitely, definitely not worth the death penalty, not even jail time. Maybe like a fine, but that should be about it

EDIT: My math is wrong since I'm not sure an eighth refers to an eighth of a kilo—apparently an eighth is ~3.5g—but I hope you get the point

I don't think you are actually thinking this through 

They would get backlash regardless of which. The former for having double standards that resulted in the deaths of many others, or the latter for well...killing a famous celebrity. As long as that person gets away scot-free, the plan would still work out. The country's law would be exposed to the world and massive attention would be brought to it, forcing them to relook at it.  But like you implied, it probably is a little risky.

Singapore is called disneyland with the death penalty for a reason. He knew what he was getting into
