Terry Richardson was Gaga's best photographer

What I like about Terry's studio work is that the white background prevents the subject from being consumed by the background.

Take this photo from her recent Harper's Bazaar photoshoot:

It's a brilliant photograph, I absolutely adore it, but the environment and background obviously add a lot of meaning and help create a feeling. The atmosphere of this photograph is created from the background, foreground, subject, fashion, pose and all these different elements.

Terry always manages to capture his subject:

You go through his photoshoots with a person and you feel like you know the kind of person they are. You know how they carry themselves, you see the depth (or lack of depth), you see the awkwardness, the freedom, the trouble, the recklessness, the reservations, the barriers, the truth.

Yeah Nick Knight, Steven Klein, David Lachapelle are all fantastic photographers and capture Gaga in surreal worlds and atmospheres.

Yeah if Gaga was followed around by another photographer we may have gotten more beautiful, perfectly framed, stylistic shots.

But we wouldn't have got:

and that's a side of Gaga we don't see very often.

I'd like him better if he wasn't a rapist :lolly: I'll stick with Kick Knight, I&V and Ruth.

Terry isn't really a professional photographer but that's what makes his work so great.  His photos stay away from the perfectly professional look instead they are raw and full of emotion.  Take away all the sexual accusations, he probably is the most famous photographer of this generation for good reason.  Nobody really does overexposure and raw lighting like he does.  He does rely on the most expensive DSLR, lens, and flash but it's what he does with them is what makes his art so iconic.  With his work we get to see celebrities in poses and emotion we normally don't see.  With a professional photographer, we don't get that.  He breaks the rules of photography and succeeds at it.  How many people can say that they became a millionaire, the most famous photographer on the planet with hardly any training and using minimal equipment?    I think Terry is the reason why I got into photography and I don't really follow the rules of photography that much.  I just take pictures the way I like to see them.  I don't care if I ever get paid or not.

This is why Terry is the best photographer she's ever worked with.  Nothing too fancy about it.  Very raw and in your face.  Sort of like Gaga herself.  Both of them have such perfect chemistry.  She is his best model he's ever had.  DWUW could of been one of her best videos ever.  Yes it would of been dark, raunchy, and uncomfortable.  Art is not safe.  From the shots that were leaked, it looked like a must see.  The best artists need something dangerous.

Nick Knight is my favourite because he always goes for the dark vibe and it's usually pretty controversial.

Terry is good at capturing her more honest moments. The ones that aren't 'staged'. I don't think Nick would capture that like Terry.

The only photographer that I don't really like is Inez & Vinoodh. I just find the photographs awkward.

I don't think he's necessarily her best photographer, but I do think he has taken some of the best photographs of her.

Not necessarily in a sense of they're the "best", but, as OP said, more in a sense of circumstance.

Very few photographers (hell, very few people) had insight into what Gaga was like as much as he did in that period between 2010 and 2013. His photographs showed a very raw side of her that was, at the moment, fairly rare.

3 points in and ready for more
