Hillary Clinton didn’t just win the popular vote. She won it by a substantial margin.

By the time all the ballots are counted, she seems likely to be ahead by more than 2 million votes and more than 1.5 percentage points, according to my Times colleague Nate Cohn. Getting rid of the Electoral College would be like picking the Superbowl Champion by who scored the most points every year.

The Electoral College is like the NFL. They don't add your total points together at the end of the season, they count the games you won.

Seriously, next time dems are in power, this should be one of their top priorities.  They have lost two presidential elections to the electoral college at this point.

The people chose Clinton. The Electoral College chose Trump. So much for a democracy. My history teacher talked about this actually. The Electoral College was created because some feared too much democracy and people might not be as well informed because of the times and the ways to get information out. Now that we have the Internet to inform us on different issues, I don't really see a reason as to why the Electoral College remains in place, because the people chose and they were ignored  

At this point it just seems like something being enforced to favor Republicans. I remember a member saying that the Republican candidate hasn't won the popular vote since the '90s?

It's not at all comparable. I see the similarity in how it's dealt, but football isn't about democracy.

Democracy is about having every voice count just as much. In the US, many years ago - back when black people and women could have no impact on the outcome of an election, they chose to represent minorities in a better way (states) to make sure their voices are heard.

These days that problem is irrelevant. The minorities in the US have changed. Adapting the system they made back then to now would mean giving black people and latinos a bigger vote share than their population represents. I'm not sure how Republicans would feel about that lol. 

The solution is to make every vote count as one, this means that a Wyoming vote, a southern Texas and a Florida vote are all as important. No longer will politicians spend their whole campaign in 7 states, they will actually pay attention to the whole country and the president will actually enjoy legitimacy.

 

 

not sure how the US constitution works, especially concerning amendments. Anyone knows about whether it's actually possible to change the system?

this also gives Democrats a way to change the narrative by the way. They can talk about changing the system, against the elite, etc in the next election based on these kind of partisan things.

More Americans wanted Clinton as their president than wanted Trump. It's that simple. Yet somehow because of the shitty system in place, Trump is the president.
