JustAnotherDay 8,402
DISCLAIMER: THIS TOPIC IS NOT AN ATTACK, JUST A DISCUSSION BASED ON THINGS I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE SAY Alicia Key is one of the biggest R&B artists of all time, a classically trained pianist, she originally broke onto the scene with her critically acclaimed debut single, Fallin', which reigned on top of the billboard hot 100 for six weeks. She followed up Fallin' with her debut album, Songs in A Minor, and subsequent releases, The Diary of Alicia Key, As I Am, The Element of Freedom, Girl On Fire, and most recently, Here. However, as time went on, many critics started noticing flaws in her vocal ability, particularly in songs such as No One and Girl On Fire. They found many harsh and unpleasant notes in studio and live versions. While many contribute it to her voice maturing and her aging, many also contribute it to bad technique which damaged her vocal cords. This has been a problem for many artists, such as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Mary J. Blige. On her most recent album, Here, released this friday. She sings undeniably flat noted multiple times (this can be heard in songs such as Illusion of Bliss and Hallelujah). So what do you think? Is she a good vocalist, did she used to be a good vocalist but ruined it? Was she ever a good vocalist? Share your thoughts. Dorothy Gale 7,575
She's a good vocalist. Even Adele has used improper technique at times.

djBuffoon 12,120
I think she's good, nothing special. She has soul and I like the smoky color in her voice. But she occasionally writes these songs that require her to do sustained, high alto notes and her voice just isn't equipped for it.

Killa 17,478
Some people here are deaf, sorry but it's obvs she can't sing anymore and hasn´t adapt to a new way of singing. I was actually gonna making a trhead after finishing listening her record. I loved Alicia Keys with all my heart, it was my second album and i meant the world to me. Her first record will always be on top 5 records of my life, i just adore all the songs so much it's crazy. I really dislike "As I am", and haven't fully listened to her last album, i'm not sure i will cause there's many music to listen to. I thought she was kinda gimmickish with this toned down look, it's kinda what Gaga is doing and i'd have to say it works for none of them. Though with the last video and listening to the album i'm getting into it. It's like, it makes sense since it's very neo.soul but when she sings with that half assed voice it makes her look even more tired and she misses the point. She abused for too long and strained with long shows. It's a pitty cause if she had more easiness in her voice and better tone, she'd access melodies more easily. Sister 9,907
Yes. She is a talented vocalist. I don't really enjoy her music though. The future's uncertain and the end is always near.
