Bowie Drummer Turned Down Grammys Tribute

David Bowie’s former drummer Mick “Woody” Woodmansey has taken aim at the Grammys’ tribute to Bowie in a new interview with NME. Woodmansey, who played in the Spiders From Mars between 1970 and 1973, said he and Tony Visconti turned down an invite to partake in the performance, which Lady Gaga fronted alongside Nile Rodgers, because the idea seemed “tacky.”

“We looked at it and it was going to be like 14 or 15 songs in the space of four minutes,” Woodmansey said, “and we just went ‘no, **** off, that’s stupid, that’s not going to represent anything good about him.’” He went on, “It was just, ‘why are you doing it?’ If there’s a genuine heartfelt thing that you wanna do out of respect, then you’d probably pull it off, but if there’s any other reason, it just gets tacky, and obviously you can’t stop that, they have a right to do it as they want to do it, but it doesn’t help a lot, it doesn’t do a lot.”

Woodmansey wasn’t the performance’s first detractor—most notably, Bowie's son, Duncan Jones, appeared to diss it on Twitter, prompting Rodgers to speak up in defense.

Bloody hooker

It seems like anyone who had some type of relation to David hates Gaga :eww:

This mutual gaze was a “longing to touch” or a "pre-coitus" stare.

Woodmansey is promoting his new memoir, Spiders From Mars: My Life With David Bowie.

So he's not only living of Gaga's hustle, but also Bowie's hustle for promoting his book for a few quick coins?

Tacky indeed.

Why is this under the "performance" tag?

Because it's about her Grammy Tribute performance

'Woodmansey is promoting his new memoir, Spiders From Mars: My Life With David Bowie.'

That explains why he's bought it up almost 9 months after it happened.

Does anyone who worked/was associated with Bowie actually like Gaga? :grr:

In my messy era.

Tribute performances are a hit or a miss with most people.

They say don't meet your heroes because they might disappoint you, or worse, hate you.

Throwback to the acclaimed tribute by Lorde at The Brits :sis:

I thought Gaga did well though, although admittedly it was a bit crammed. They could have cut a song or two. Stuck with the beginning, the moving keyboard and then into Heros with the holograms.

I never got Gaga's love for Bowie. To me her love seems very genuine, but Bowie wasn't very nice to her.

He's my dad's age and he also hates Gaga. I think it's a generational thing. They include her in with the other pop girls and think she lacks substance. Rather annoying.

Well, Gaga only sang 8 of his songs, not 14 or 15 but also, the fact that he responds to an offer with "**** off" says more about him than the tribute itself.

Seems like Nile Rodgers is the only one associated with Bowie who actually likes Gaga. :ohno:

Am I the only one who Iactually LOVED Gaga's Bowie tribute even though it was slightly messy?  You know she was dedicated to it.
