This is why Come To Mama sounds like a Christmas song

The reason we associate Come To Mama with Christmas music is because it sounds like a classic Phil Spector production - a man who worked with many famous artists including The Beatles and girl groups of the 1960's. These girl groups like The Ronettes, with help from Phil Spector, made a bunch of Christmas music that has become iconic today, and has been permanently cemented in the holiday sound. Christmas music is special in that the same old tracks are played every year during the holiday season. Because we hear so much Christmas music with that 60's sound when it's blasted on radios, we tend to associate that style of sound with that season. Whereas you can't guarantee that people hear that 60's sound during the rest of the year, it's pretty damn likely that you'll hear it during Christmas.

So, because that sound is most common to our ears when listening to the more-often-played Christmas tracks, we associate it with Christmas music. Therefore, since Come To Mama was inspired by 60's music, we think it sounds like Christmas.

Example: Christmas (Baby Please Come Home). Produced by Phil Spector, sung by Darlene Love. 1963.

So, Come To Mama is obviously inspired by a 60's brand of music. It's not Christmas, but because that classic 60's sound has come to be associated with holidays due to our increased exposure to it through holiday tracks, we see CTM as being Christmas-y. As some of us are so young, we weren't born in the time when this brand of music was still popular. For some of us, our only exposure to this sound has been through Christmas tracks - a section which is an amalgamation of different genres from different decades. Whether Gaga was inspired by the 60's or inspired by 60's Christmas music specifically, we don't know. I suspect it's the latter. But for those of us who grew up listening to Christmas music with this sound, it makes total sense for Come To Mama to remind us of a time riddled with nostalgia.

It's Gaga-esque doo-wop (and doo-wop is my favorite). She was probably inspired by the Supremes, etc. She knows her music!

Been a long time but I'm back in town, and this time I'm not leaving without you

ya'll need to stop. SHE wasn't inspired by anyone. Haven't you heard the demo that FJM released? She barely worked on the song.

This is the kind of thing I say when I have no argument; I simply nitpick things I can argue against. Sorry, I forgot she wasn't the one who wrote it. That doesn't change anything else about this topic.

I wasn't actually disagreeing with you. I wasn't actually really even responding to you, but to one of the comments above mine, and also the general discourse surrounding this song, esp. since some people were trying to interpret what the inclusion of rainbows meant and if it was a reference to LGBT. If anything, i'm just disappointed since FJM wrote it entirely and Mark did his signature throwback production meaning Gaga likely had very little involvement, if we're being honest.

But yes, it's clear that people are attributing CTM to the xmas sound, for the reason you stated. I've even said in a previous post sometime earlier this week that it sounded like Baby please come home.

That being said, why does everyone pinpoint CTM as being xmas sounding? would the same people say the same about Meghan's music?

But it would be a great single for the cold season for next year. The theme is very heart warming and people will love that song during this time.....

The message is just so beautiful

Meghan's music doesn't have that Spector sound, CTM does. Spector was the king of producing hit 60's Xmas music.
