danilov 288
Just a thought. I think it was good (for me at least) PI became the first single for Joanne, the first 'sneak peek' for the album, because frankly if they chose a "better" song or yet the best one, I would kinda be underwhelmed with PI when I hear the entire album for the first time--like I would really notice that it's not my fave at all. It could be in my lasts among the tracks. (Dont kill me ). My reaction with PI now that we know it so much is that I appreciate it already--I can peacefully play it with the rest of its brethren. It's like they chose PI to kinda tone down the hype before the album's release tbh for me. EDIT: This is my first topic. I'm kinda scared posting opinions because. Haha. Forgive me for not liking it at first. But after several plays, I find it REALLY GOOD. So pardon me T__T
Klonoa 2,194
Because it's one of the best songs.
DeanWinchester 41,390
Nah, execs probably chose it because it sounds the most like her old work Flyin' like a 1000 Doves
kizurl 1,801
After listening to the whole album for nearly 2 days, I'm convinced it's the perfect choice. It has the right adrenaline and tone as a lead single.
Red 98,470
Because it is the best song on the album by far? If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.

Bradley 59,689
Why are we describing Perfect Illusion like it's Nicki Minaj's Stupid Hoe?
FlyingF 485
It had most relatable lyrics, most Gaga sound, was the most hard-hitting and was also quite simple (simple sweet and ragey i think she described it as) out of the songs that could be possible singles, so yes this was exactly the right single to lead the album with
Fiona Apple 13,006
PI is not bad for an album track but for a lead single it's VERY weak .It's a 6-7/
danilov 288
:(( Sorry for not liking PI (at first!) But right now, my least played song is John Wayne (dont kill me again haha). Yes I agree that PI is similar with her previous work. And also it has the right elements for a lead single. It just didn't clicked to me at the very first listen. YeehawKylie 7,817
People shade PI like no other. It's not a bad song, or a bad single. However, it's not very representative of the album, but I like that about it. I'd much rather transition into loving the album, then get less impressed the more I heard from it. I think her team handled it correctly, using it as a soft lead. Didn't someone say you don't lead with your best song? I think that's good. I feel like the follow up singles will be more successful and contribute to album sales longevity.

To add to that, and to be really honest (and this fact I'm sad), some of my friends (who are only Fame-era Gaga fans) didn't really like PI. (saying it's weirddd, scratching they heads) And after hearing the promo singles, they're all like wow after all, her album is great!!!
XMonsterMonster 1,555
I can't imagine other song as the lead single, PI was the best choice to open the new era, I am really glad that they choose this song. now give us the second single gurl

Imagine if your friends--or the countless people out there like them--heard a song they actually liked when the lead single radio deal was in place. It would have generated tons more enthusiasm for both the album and the Gaga enterprise as a whole. Instead, PI didn't click with people and killed the hype train before it ever left the station. There's no momentum now because of it. (this isn't to say a second or third single couldn't get things back on track--it's just harder without the lead single landing) I get why some people are happy it was released as a single (it's always fun when one of your fave songs gets the single treatment and therefore gets airplay and a video, etc.) But, objectively speaking, it didn't really succeed at what a single is supposed to do: create hype and serve as promotion and marketing. I think they chose the route where people'll end up liking the album rather than end up not liking it--like a reverse psychology or something like that. And also for longevity: they probably don't like the album charting at the start only (because of a really good lead single). So they end up using PI--the 'just right' one. I'm thinking too much about this.
