Edonis 28,950
So it's no surprising that Angel Down, one of the most anticipated tracks from Joanne is already a fan favorite due to the sheer emotional nature of the song, but will the meaning behind the lyrics be controversial in the media? For those unaware, Gaga confirmed tonight that the song was inspired by the recent gun violence issues in America (as seen by the lyric, shots were fire on the street by the church where we used to meet) and particularly the death of Trayvon Martin, a young African American teen who was unarmed and gunned down by George Zimmerman, a member of the neighborhood watch. She further confirmed it's connection to the highly controversial movement, Black Lives Matter, which was in part driven by the death of the young teen. My question is: Will such a meaning prove to be controversial to the general public, the media, and the African American community? BLM already has a polarizing stigma in the media today as there are many supporters and detractors from the social movement. Will Gaga involving herself in a political song (BTW era teas) bring about lots of controversy as well, or will it be well received? Will the African American community who is very much involved in the BLM movement respond well to a white female artist touching topics that are very sensitive to the community as a whole? Could she face the possibility of being seen as whitewashing an issue for the sake of sales, etc.? Please, discuss.
Edonis 28,950
And for the record, I do think she will face A LOT of criticism for this song since the meaning has been revealed due to the highly sensitive and divisive nature of the topic, however, I think it's the right thing to do and I applaud her for her efforts. At the end of the day, a young boy died that day and a mother and father lost their son. This is a human issue that's been plaguing the black community and I'm proud of Gaga for taking a stand and voicing her concerns 💕💕💕
Quartz 12,491
The bad thing about being political is that she can't just dip her toe in the issue. If she has one song about it, she will be sucked in as an acitivist. I don't really care. She sung about a tragedy, asking for action from the government and society as a whole. Is that a reason to crucify somebody? Honestly, I see controversy but I also see respect. She's singing about ACTUAL issues that are almost always ignored. She's brave. Inside, we are really made the same. 🕊

It comes with the nature of the song. She's bound to get critics coming into such a divisive topic but at the end of the day she stood up for what she believes in is right. Nicogly 2,579
I dont think many outside the fanbase will know about it tho...sadly. She should release it as a single. my view on this album is that obviously its not going to be a smash, so she should have videos for those songs that have real passionate meaning to her (i know its most of em, but maybe the closest ones to her heart) Rock On and A Last One For the Road 🚬

I really hope she relseases Angel Down as a single because it's does deserve to be heard by the public if she performs it at the Super Bowl (which she probably won't) it could gain a lot of traction there

But I feel like it would be better near the close of the performance with like a choir and photos of victims and stuff. I have a performance in my head already

Tbh I highly doubt a lot of people will take notice. I personally don't think she will attract controversy. Especially from the black community. They want other races to speak up. We want other races to speak up. Off topic: I cant wait for the pseudo intelligent racist to show up to this thread.
KleinGa 18,177
I love that she doesn't keep her mouth shut on things that are important to us and the world we live in. However, one song can't do Gaga, we need your voice to shout it louder than ever. #BLACKLIVESMATTER

I honestly think it'll be well received by the black community overall but there will always be someone out there who wants to think otherwise Off topic: They're probably asleep. FATCAT 59,901
I personally think Gaga should have made a bigger step with the song and not dance around the subject matter with vague details, but I'm glad she made the steps she did none the less. I agree but I think she'll probably be more clear about it in the future if the song is a single/if she's promoting the album and asked about it. I'm actually kind of glad she didn't talk about it so much in the previous radio interviews because I feel like that could be misconstrued as exploitation in a weird way. Like if she just went interview to interview and was like, "hey guys I have a BLM song on my record it's my favorite" in like every interview But I definitely agree. She should be a bit more clear/upfront about it in the future.
