styleyourvision 606
This is an article the author of the NYT Joanne review wrote in 2010 about Gaga'a impact, including a feminist impact, on pop music: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/25/arts/music/25feminism.html Just one example from the article that shows how this writer's own past words work against the "arguments" in his Joanne review: "[Lady Gaga's] fingerprints are all over the revised images of Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Beyoncé; and on new artists like Kesha, Janelle Monáe and Nicki Minaj. These performers might not cite Lady Gaga as a direct influence, but the work she’s done since her 2008 debut album, “The Fame” (Cherrytree/Kon Live/Streamline/Interscope), has nudged loose conventional boundaries. The space for women in pop to try out new aesthetic identities hasn’t been this vast in some time. This new feminism is more about the opportunity to make choices than about any specific choice itself. And it’s freeing, this expansion of musical liberation into spaces visual as well as sonic, instinctual as well as intellectual, performed as well as lived." I can't take him seriously when just a few years ago he was touting Gaga for making her own choices about her identity and pushing the boundaries of the music industry. Oh, and by his own implied defnition of feminism in this article, his Joanne review is arguably anti-feminist.

I swear, every review is like that, it's annoying. Do your job, you are not a life advisor, you are a music critic. EXACTLY! Everytime, these critics come at her as they are entitled to tell her what to do with her musicianship. It's the music that needs a review, not her career decisions. It's happening the same that happened back in the day with Led Zeppelin. Only the fans and the public appreciated the work.

Slayer 9,227
"ARTPOP, her lat album, which fopped." Wow, I had no idea platinum selling albums were considered flops lmao. This article is an actual joke. I am sick of these so-called music reviewers giving such one-sided reviews. There are pros and cons to everything, and as a reviewer it's your responsibility to look for both to give a fair assessment. This review just reads like someone who had made up their mind about the album before even listening to it. I love judas SO MUCH but I canʹt look like a copycat of JLO!!!! Robo Ga 15,299
Just now, oheyitso said: "These performances were ostentatious in a different way — nude makeup, but makeup nonetheless." Performances that were praised from the heavens about her music ability and sophistication are instead replaced by comments on her makeup? What relevance does this have to do with anything in regards to her musical ability? The fact that he literally judged an era on her makeup makes me seething mad. It's actually misogynistic and hateful. How the hell did this get past an editor at NYT? I might email them too. 🤖⚡️

"Ms. Welch’s singing isn’t nearly as brazen as it ordinarily is (though it easily outclasses Lady Gaga’s)." "But while “Joanne” is elemental, nothing about it is bare." "It’s naïve in its use of roots music and rock as signifiers of something true" This are all so very true. I like the album though. No one is saying they are wrong on every level, but they album has a lot of good things. They should have pointed that out if they wanted the review to be objective. A 40/100 is simply wrong. It doesn't help they are write a long a*s review about her past, her as person and the da*n chainsmokers and only like a 20% about the actual album. I know that it will always be cool to sh*t on lady gaga but come on.
