Snow 1,582
I would say equal. Because in The end of The day, they both are massive, but in a slightly different ways. So their "success" is hard to compare objectively. So yeah, I'll go with both are as Iconic yet in a but different ways. (gave my vote to M because obviously she isn't going to ve voted here, being The Enemy number one, still *sigh*) absolutely love MJ too! God they truly were huge. Younger ppl really don't get it.... TheBatman 951
Definitely Madonna. Both are huge legendary icons. But honestly MJ stopped being relevant for anything other than his court cases and plastic surgery a few years into the 90's, and really has just one or two iconic looks and moments. Madonna has stacked up SO many more moments and looks, and she is so divisive and controversial, and has pushed so many social boundaries. Her social commentary on religion sexuality and ageism are historic and undeniable. And she never stopped. MJ is still a huge icon and the king of pop, but Madonna is more iconic than him, Prince, Whitney, and on and on.

Gagaterium 220
Like someone else here said, it's only because of the poll itself, as out of the two fan bases, only little bottom medonsters actually read buzzfeed. There are few Michael stans left, and you can bet your sweat potatoes that you won't find most reading buzzfeed articles. If the general public were to vote, Michael would still win, only because Madonna is still stigmatized in most parts of the world. She may be known as a pop icon, but many people don't appreciate her for that, not like they appreciate Michael. (mostly due to sexism, ageism and a lot of puritanism, especially when it comes to her public image). Spoiler Also, I may love Madonna, but she's been ruining the last remnants of credibility she has since 2008. BUY APPLAUSE ON ITUNES
gagu 1,928
Maybe I don't know what Iconic really means, so I voted thinking more about the music and the kind of musician they were, rather than their personas/influence. I think MJ was a music genius, I still get goosebumps when I listen to his tracks. But it wasn't a simple choice either! "Jezus iz a biskweeeet!" Gaga Medicine 265
I don't know, I think Madonna could be seen as more iconic due to the lenght and consistence of her career but Michael Jackson is by far a better singer, dancer and songwriter. Also, I think his music aged so well, they are really timeless. Can't say the same about Madonna's music before Like a Prayer, they sound dated imo. But to be completely honest, Madonna was never a unanimity when it comes to good music, at least not on the same level as MJ. If you say bad things about MJ's music you are seen as a moron, but if you say bad things about Madonna's music people don't really care. You can see other musicians praising MJ a lot, but you don't see the same about Madonna. MJ status is like he is a god, Madonna not so much. So he may be more iconic because of that (I mean, if he was able to make the media and other musicians transform him into a "god", he must be very iconic). Maybe when Madonna dies she will reach this status too, but I don't think she will (I may be underestimating her though). EDIT: I voted Michael Jackson. I thought better and came to the conclusion that MJ is more iconic in every way. Madonna is the "queen" not because she is on the same level as MJ, but because she was the pioneer in pop culture among women with solo careers. And they started before that. Why do americans think they've invented everything? Off the Wall (the album that set the stage for Thriller) was released in 1979 too. MJ is not just Thriller and Bad. But I liked your post that ABBA revolutionized pop music first because they did start to be successful before MJ did. MJ started his solo career in 1971, and that was before ABBA (1972) but MJ began to be a dominant figure in pop culture only in 1979 with Off the Wall.
