It might be accurate that they'd prefer it, but they can surely opt to perform live. Listen to the horrendous vocals in many parts of BEP's show - there is no way that was pre-recorded. I vaguely remember some part of Katy's being quite pitchy as well so I think that was live, though I only watched that once (when it was on) so I could be wrong on that. Katheryn pre recorded live vocals, like Bey. The reason why is because it's very hard to set up and dismantle imbetween commercial breaks, the stage and lights are the main focus so the sound is sort of put on the backburner. It makes it easier for the lip syncing to happen, also why it was easier for Gaga to sing the national anthem live considering it was before the game

If it's for a full band where micing up amps and drums etc is involved, then maybe that would make more sense. But even then, that is literally the purpose of soundcheck which takes place before the event... Microphones will be plugged into the mixer to the correct levels and left there, then they will literally just hand it to the vocalist at showtime. If they have time to put in lighting rigs, pyro, enormous screens etc then they absolutely can give out a few microphones and ear pieces. When I read about it a few years ago it was said that the reason for it was due to bad acoustics in stadiums which is slightly more believable but also doesn't really make sense. Considering they are mostly catering to the TV audience - so the venue acoustics don't matter as much - and the fact that artists play in stadiums all the time. Did Katy really pre-record? Is there receipts for that? I coulda sworn she went off-key at some points. Beyonce is known to have pre-recorded vocals for major events so I sort of guessed that. Madonna certainly lip-synched. She said "parts" were pre recorded, but when I watched her making of on youtube, the rehearsals were always a live track being played. The exact same as the performance. And Katheryn always goes off key girl lbr. And Bey's been caught lipping on tour, too. But I sort of feel it's okay for Bey to lip sync because she only lip syncs parts and always delivers and sells it.
