Werk 13,166
Is it true Gaga had to pay the radios to play songs from The Fame?
lavieenrose 410
I think the rumor said 'beg' instead of 'pay'

tyke95 81
You all should brush up on some music industry history. Paying radio stations to play your music is completely illegal. Google "payola" and you'll be greeted with some valuable information. There are radio promotion companies that exist which labels commonly use. These companies call each and every radio station to basically beg them to play the new music. But no money is ever involved. Gaga does not have a radio deal as many people keep mentioning on this forum. Such a thing would never be allowed to exist.

Gaga invented them with Born This Way. No money involved per se. - payola does exist. It's done with a middleman, and usually not in pure cash but in the form of trips and other gifts. And it's not necessarily obliging radio to play the song, but 'recommending'.

Radio is "pay to play" A lot of the time the success of an artist is determined by how much the record company is willing to promote them.
