Just because a song is not an instant smash, breaking world records and changing people's lives in its first day doesn't mean it's a flop :neyde: If anything "Perfect Illusion" is a success so far. Not every song can be "Hello"..

This definition from Wikipedia has to do with films, but I trust one can replace the words with equivalents to the music industry.

"...A "box office bomb" or "box office flop" is a film that is viewed as highly unsuccessful or unprofitable during its theatrical run, sometimes preceding hype regarding its cost, production, or marketing efforts. Generally, any film for which the production and marketing costs exceed the combined revenue recovered after release is considered to have "bombed".

Gauging the financial success of a film is difficult, and because there is no reliable definition, what makes a box-office bomb can be very subjective. Not all films that fail to earn back their estimated costs during their theatrical runs are bombs, and the label is generally applied to films that miss earnings projections by a wide margin, particularly when they are very expensive to produce, and sometimes in conjunction with middling or poor reviews (though critical reception has an imperfect connection to box office performance)."

Economy

I guess its all a matter of expectation

Most released songs are unknown to most people and dont even touch the top 100 charts

A song that reaches #95 for example is already more successful than most

But a huge artist like Gaga, Sia, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Drake etc etc etc

These Elite artists labeks spend a lot of money in promotion and theres an expectation for them to do well...

If a song doesnt reach the top 10 with promo and a big artist name attached, by the standards of the ellite in the industry, its a flop

Selling 100k in the first week is a flop for Gaga's standards whether we like it or not :P.And not an ARTPOP kind of flop.A real one
