Perfect Illusion: A drug anthem

Okay, I love the song. I really, really do. That 1:50 switch up got to me on a spiritual level. I see some people saying they don't like it, I personally do. I love it, sonically. Now, what I'm looking at with a slightly squinty eye are the lyrics...

"High like amphetamine
Maybe you're just a dream
That's what it means to crush
Now that I'm wakin' up
I still feel the blow
But at least now I know"

Really girl, really? I thought you quit them drugs? The song leaves NO room for imagination or doubt at all. "Blow" means coke and the amphetamines part is most likely ecstasy (MDMA) as she also references it with the "Dilated, falling free, in a modern ecstasy"- part. The entire song is about a relationship that happened high on drugs and then seeing it wasn't true love, but a perfect illusion... I get that she has to get her inspiration somewhere but to openly reference drugs... The weed thing is one thing, I personally never really loved Princess High and Mary Jane Holland but this is a lead single...

She said in her 2011 Amanda de Cadenet interview "there is this romanticism about drugs, that it' sexy and artistic. That you're troubled and you will make great music, when you're really just a f*cking loser." Look at the interview below.

And now she makes a song that is sure to go #1, openly referencing cocaine and ecstasy? I am not here for that. That's the only part of Gaga I strongly, strongly dislike and plain out refuse to accept. She DOES this to herself, remember her 2010 Vanity Fair interview? "I prayed to become crazy." She takes drugs and goes into this state of self-destruction because that's where inspiration comes from. As if it's the only way to access it. She likes to be this traumatized, tortured artist when in reality, she's only harmed herself. And for what? This song could've easily used another metaphor than the drug one.

Gaga better have a damn good explanation in the following hours/days/weeks.

I'm not here for those references. :nails: I do love the song and have bought but I will not endorse this song. If I'm standing at the LG5 Tour, front row, this is the 1 song I wouldn't sing along to.

Please refrain from calling me "a prude" or "conservative"... I'm not. This song could be about public sex and I wouldn't say a thing. I just don't think romanticizing drugs is okay, it creates a perception of "oh but Gaga does it and look at her" for young, impressionable minds. I've seen people, really beautiful, talented people go nowhere and ruin their lives by taking drugs. Gaga came close to it, just watch the MTN video...

And now we get "I still feel the blow"?

BYE! NO BITCH NO! :diane:

I don't condone this and I'm sorry if I'm raining on anyone's parade, I do love the song sonically. But lyrically and just on a personal level, I am very disappointed.

She said she was high like Amphetamine. NOT I am high on Amphetamine my gawd :laughga: Aaliyah once said in hit Rock The Boat "boy you make me feel I'm dope, cause you serve me a regular" it's not new. She is not said she's on drugs. I think it's pretty obvious without her even having a song Dope where she talks about how addiction battle.

But in the end, the relationship was bad for her right? So if the song is about love on drugs and she denounces that love, doesn't that mean she's anti drugs? :laughga:

I recall Lady Gaga tweeting about loving P-orn and p-ornstars, to me it seems more fitting of the p*rn industry. p0rn friendly, you know some, I'll use your word, "prudes" have such a negative view about p0rn, and some people also think p0rn is reality and expect sex to be like that when they have it, but then complain it never is and then they condemn p-orn and p-ornstars, a lot of people don't realize p-orn is an illusion, a fantasy to get the viewer off, a lot of men and women who appear to be perfect, you know, big breasts, big d*cks, bubble butts, stuff like that, it's all illusionary to get viewers off, to me PI is kind of anthemic to what p0rn stars go through.

Maybe you haven't been around people who do drugs but look at this song structure. Every other line is a drug reference, there is no room for imagination or discussion. Amphetamines are the active "ingredients" in MDMA and loads of other drugs . "Crush" could be up for debate if it wasn't placed in a paragraph about drugs so it's clearly also a reference... "Crushing" is also a term related to drugs. And then "I still fill the blow"... Now that leaves NO room for discussion. Blow is lingo for cocaine. It has been and always has been and it is her drug of choice so she knows damn well cocaine is called blow on the streets.

Don't excuse her, you know DAMN WELL, she is referencing drugs throughout this entire song

But that's not the perception it gives to someone who can't comprehend that it's bad. We KNOW it's bad. But openly using terms like "amphetamines", "blow", "ecstasy"... It's romanticizing drugs. Which she stated, in 2011, is "for losers".

She is comparing her love to drugs the keyword is like... high like MJ boy you make me feel basketball because you are always going to make me score spend money on me like Js... she's not talking about she is on drugs she is comparing it to it that's what the word like means... in the sentence she is using it to compare it to something.

That's the perception I got though. I don't know about you but she is having parallels with drugs and a bad and exciting relationship.

Then explain "I still feel the blow"? And why would she chose cocaine and MDMA as metaphors when she is a known addict?

You are reaching sis... "comparing" not "talking about it". You know damn well that's a bucket full of BS. She IS talking about it and she IS romanticizing it, which she stated before was for "f*cking losers".

And look what we have here....

Sonically I applaud her, lyrically I'm disappointed. Anyone who truly cares about her well-being should be concerned, also. But y'all are just happy you got new music after this entire time, I get that. But don't excuse her and say I'm wrong when it's laid out clearly in front of you.

There's not even an OUNCE of room to debate about this. It's not debatable, the entire song is about "chemical love".

HOW many songs equate drugs and love? It's a pretty standard theme in lyrics I would imagine.

You are giving me Judas vibes when the news thought she actually was worshipping Judas and the devil. She is obviously comparing herself to the drug and I already explained to you. You are reaching for some odd reason.

And since when is Gaga "pretty standard"? Using drugs as a metaphor, unless done with a clear warning sign, in pop culture, is stupid. We Found Love, especially with the video, could also be seen as a song about a relationship on drugs. It doesn't openly reference it lyrically, but in the video it's clear. But Rihanna comes back to reality in the video, sees what she's doing, physically pukes, takes her bags and leaves and THAT is the end of the video.

And WHY even bother going back to the drug reference AT ALL? Haven't we gotten enough of it? Wasn't MTN the "most personal song and video" ever? Why do it now? Is she back on drugs?

This is sad tbh. And I can't believe some of you would defend this. As long as you get the bops, right? Screw the fact Gaga might self-destruct or make it "cooler" for some kid out there...
