BibleThisWay 4,370
This has always puzzled me. I get that demos haven't got nearly as much time worked on them as finished products, but why do most demos sound extremely LQ, like do they not use proper equipment to record and just record vocals on a laptop? Some don't sound too bad and are quite clear but some can be very bad quality
SpookyKid 15,153
well, some demos are recorded in studio, but some of them not, for example, LoveGame demo was recorded with her laptop, or sometimes Gaga records ideas for songs on her phone Life has a hopeful undertone |-/
ReidOne 12,427
The process of recording a "finished" song is very time consuming and expensive (and usually requires lots of folks contributing). "Demos" are rough recordings/productions that songwriters and producers make give artists and record labels a basic idea of what the song will sound like (and often, they do it to "pitch" the song to an artist that they want to record it professionally). Then, once the artist or record label decides that the song is something they want to include on the album, they will record it professionally and perfect it. The reason some sound better than others is become some songwriters/producers are able to do all their own recording, mixing, engineering, etc... (so it's easy/inexpensive for them to make a really high quality sounding demo) whereas others are "just" songwriters and not as skilled at producing a final track. SpookyKid 15,153
+ maybe you don't know if the song is going to work, so why waste money on renting a studio if nothing will come out of it? Life has a hopeful undertone |-/
ReidOne 12,427
I would add, even some super skilled producers make rough sounding demos, just because they aren't sure yet whether the song will be any good and they are just trying to assemble the song they hear in their head, but aren't ready to commit the time to perfect it. FATCAT 60,007
It depends on a whole host of things, but usually a song is in "demo" stages until it's officially released. It's why we call Aura's first vocals the "demo" take, even when it was probably finished. We could get a demo far along in the process, or at the very beginning, but usually Gaga will record using her phone or laptop before booking a studio or something. She's got a ton of demos on her old Blackberry, and I'm sure she's got them on her iPhone. This kitten over here (meow)
