Everything Gaga's said about LG5 (2014-Present)

I just wanted to compile everything I can recall that Gaga's said about her new music. We're so close now I can't believe it.  Let me know if there's anything I missed!

December 2014 - Yahoo

Spoiler

“I want the fans to be surprised,” she says. “But I will just tell you that it’s a wonderful, soul-searching experience. And it’s very unlike the last album in that way. I made that album on the road. ARTPOP was, you know, the acid-making record. And this record is like—my old self as a cadaver. And I’m just, I’m operating on my old self.”

December 2014 - Howard Stern (Radio)

Spoiler

“I just want to sing and I want to write good songs. And I’m going to take the next year to write songs.”

August 2015 - Entertainment Weekly

Spoiler

Gaga told EW that AHS signaled a return for her to “the art of darkness.” It figures then that this experience on TV’s scariest series would influence her new music. “Yes it will,” says Gaga. “It will inform me from this day forward, everyday more and more.”

October 2015 - The Inquirer

Spoiler

"I am finding a million new things about myself, what I want and who I want to be but most importantly, I have actually found a place to put so much pain and anguish that I have nowhere to put," Gaga told The Inquirer. "You can put it in your music but that's not always what people want from me in my music... They want a sweet, delightful, 'Just Dance' kind of girl or they want 'Bad Romance' and that's fine."

She continued: "I am happy to give people that but maybe with my song 'Dope' or some of the things I did on ARTPOP, you saw a kind of dark side, wrapped up in colors. But maybe that was not always what people want to see. They want to see the perfection. Here (on Hotel), it's the imperfection that is the win. So it's very liberating."

December 2015 - Billboard (Video)

Spoiler

(Looking at the sunset) “Isn’t that so amazing? I mean if you can’t write music to that sunset, something’s wrong with you.”

“Well the first thing I asked myself when I came into the house was how am I gonna try to relate to people all over the world and make songs that make people feel like they belong together, if I don’t feel like I can relate to the outside world sometimes? So I really put it upon myself to focus on being mindful and being present and fighting for my existence in nature. Because once I start to fight for that, the stuff that I write about is just deepest desires and objectives in life.”

December 2015 - Billboard (Magazine)

Spoiler

“I'm really excited about showing girls, and even men, what it can mean to be a woman in her 30s. Why is it that we're disposing of people once they pass that mark? It's suddenly, 'You're an old woman.' I'm not f---ing old. I'm more sexual and powerful and intelligent and on my s--t than I've ever been. I've come a long way through a lot of heartache and pain, but none of it made me damaged goods. It made me a fighter. I want to show women they don't need to try to keep up with the 19-year-olds and the 21-year-olds in order to have a hit. Women in music, they feel like they need to f---ing sell everything to be a star. It's so sad. I want to explode as I go into my 30s.”

“You can’t sell your soul once you make it. It’s a big mistake to just go after the money to try to stay on top. I think that’s what everyone wanted me to do... Can’t being an artist be enough? Is talent ever the thing? I think for Adele it is. I think for Bruno Mars it is. But that’s what I learned from working with Tony: If talent isn’t the thing, then you are way off-base... The thing that makes me happy is that piano.”

January 2016 - Golden Globes

Spoiler

"For many people, darkness is just that. They see it as just a bleak, empty space that is totally vacant and void. But I think, for me darkness is an expression of art, you can create things that are so beautiful out of what makes you sad . . . You will fail in this business. The true test is if you can continue, and stand up. I learned that from her. And I suppose I will explore that, through my music. I love the art of darkness."

January 2016 - V Magazine

Spoiler

"I've been writing a lot for the past year," Gaga said. "[American Horror Story] has really affected my voice, I have to say. I'm using my listening from acting in my music more, which is crucial because it's music. Who knew I could listen even more? It's amazing to even talk about. There's a tremendous freedom and a recklessness, but there's also a sophistication in the show. There's a lot of liberation, but it's a very chic liberation. Here's what I will say: when I wasn't working on the show I was truly miserable because I had no safe house to get out any of my vices. Now I have a safe house for my vices so when I'm making music I just have a lot more clarity. I have a little less of an instinct to be reckless with my music now because I'm reckless in other places."

"So now I'm thinking more about what it is I want to say and what I want to leave on Earth. It's less an expression of all my pain. There will be some of my pain on the record for sure, but it will be more than that. My last album was riddled with a ton of pain. That whole record. It's almost like you couldn't even get to what it is. Now, the show gives me an outlet to put things somewhere, so when I get to the piano I'm in a deeper place already. I have something completely other to explore.”

June 2016 - Variety with Jamie Lee Curtis (Video)

Spoiler

(On writing a song) "You’re in a room together and there’s literally nothing there but two people and a bunch of instruments. And all of the sudden you look up and it sounds like a record that you’ve heard a million times."

August 2016 - iHeartRadio

Spoiler

In collaboration with super-producer Mark Ronson and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, "Perfect Illusion” finds a sweet space in Mother Monster’s catalogue alongside some of her best dance floor anthems. It’s a cut that touches the highest of highs and lowest of lows in a relationship gone wrong, thus, the perfect illusion. "The song is about modern ecstasy . . . .We found our sweet, simple, ragey way of saying it," she explained during her appearance at iHeartRadio HQ in New York City.

And, yes, that kind of vibrant energy was evident when the trio worked on the heartbreak anthem at Shangri-La Studios in Malibu, California. Gaga recalled the sunlight pouring through the trees in the window as the record came to fruition. "I get this sick adrenaline rush every time I hear it,” she added.

And the one after that :toofunny:

She's giving mixed hints... at once she says she's making this a very dark album (which in Gaga terms means DOPE vocals), and the other time she says she's got AHS for her dark side, so she'll explore other themes instead of pain.

The quote about writing songs while watching the sunset is interesting, I forgot that. I wonder how the sun imagery will come into play since she's referenced it so much.

Seeing her talk about how she's exploring her old self and rooting out her prime quality-- talent, is exciting and makes me so happy for her. It is truly like seeing a Phoenix rise from the ashes.

At some point she'd felt herself being submerged into the hands of greedy people who took advantage of her ambition as an artist, to the point that she felt sick. And now, she has a solid support system, she's endeavoring new experiences, and she's looking at sunsets and enjoying nature.

You don't deserve a point of view if the only thing you see is you.

All I'm getting from every thing before August 2016 is that it will be a more mellow, perhaps even acoustic album (a la Adele)...but seems like PI is the exact opposite...lol. This bish confuses the sh*t out of me.

Maybe she's changed direction a few times on this album...We'll never know. :(

What I gather from this is: the album will be more of an outlet for Gaga to express different topics other than pain and she will say something important on this album. I don't think it'll be heavily dark or heavily light, but a good balance. I think she'll be extremely confident on this album and explore her sexuality, womanhood, and humanity. I think this will be the closest we will get to Stefani. Born this Way was the closest we got to Gaga.

Agree! Think it's really her "coming of age" album. I just hope that it doesn't become too, too personal and exclude the GP (like ARTPOP - it was just too unrelatable).

I think she's making an album that's relatable because she said in the billboard article from December 2015 that she is addressing what's relatable to people all over the world and what makes people feel like they belong together
